Hi there,
I have a 1.4 L Getz and done only 700 Km. I recently filled it to the brim and did so again after 432 Km where it took 41.2 L (almost a whole tank.)
I thought roughly 430 Km to (almost) a tankful isn't very impressive. That translates to 9.5 L / 100 Km or for those from another planet, 24.7 MPG.
Admittedly a lot of the driving is to where my partner works, and that is only 3 Km down the road and the engine only gets warmed up by the time they arrive there. But a fair amount is spent on freeways and highways, and I would have thought I would have got between 7 and 8 L per 100 Km. I'm a Sagittariian : born optimists.
Comments or opinions folks?

Thanks for the optimism Ian. We're off up the Garden Route in 3 weeks time, so that should reveal her true colours! And true - I won't squeal about the consumption yet; it does need to be run-in & loosen up. Goes like a dream though.
Cheers (or Tot Siens!)

Hi there. Very interested in your comments on fuel consumption of the 1.4 Getz. I am a driving instructor in the UK and have been very surprised at the poor fuel economy around town. Sorry for the old fashioned units, but since buying the car new in May 07 I appear to be averaging around 28mpg, which is quite awful, especially compared with my old Micra 1.3GX which returned around 35mpg. I did a motorway run the other day and have been getting the learners to develop a "light right foot" with the result that I got around 35mpg when I filled-up today. Even that is well below what I expected though. The car has done about 4000 miles to-date so I wonder how long till it's "run-in"? Best regards.

There are so may factors influencing fuel economy, as you as an instructor would know. But around 25 MPG I think is pathetic - even if I were (and I'm not) "lead-foot." In my dotage I've come to not believe what I read in brochures, but if my consumption doesn't improve as the car "loosens up" me & Hyundai are going to lock horns.
Take care
Larry

Hey Guys
Dunno if this will mean anything.
Route A to work: Freeway driving: I get between 520 and 540km on a tank on an open road. There is usually a couple of litres left in the tank on fill up. Route B to work: Getting stuck in traffic: I get 480km at best.
My 1.4 is sitting on just over 30 000km.

Wow, those numbers do scare me!
What happened to the advertised 6.1l/100km? granted i would expect a 7-8 with a heavy foot, but 10-12 just sounds silly..

What you say, makes sense. Using gears a lot and certainly using the air-con can & will kill any hopes of good economy. But over here in South Africa you just can't go without the air-con in summer. I guess it's a bit of a trade-off: comfort at a price!
And I think it's a reasonable assumption that a 1600 cc car will perform better (economy-wise) than a 1400 cc. Why? A bigger engine driving much the same weight; less effort!
All the best
Larry

Haha, I do admit that the air cond does not help at all!
Would re-gassing help?
As for petrol consumption, having driven the car for a couple of months now, managed to get 500km with high octane (vpower) and 400km with normal petrol.

Howzit Larry
Does your car have a catalytic converter? Easy to find out: have a look at you petrol filler spout. If it does not have the restricter to prevent Large nozzle petrol hose or the warning "Unleaded Petrol only" stuck on the inside of the tank entry cover, then it does not have one. The absence of emission control makes these cars very heavy on fuel. The catalytic converter is missing, lambda (O2) sensor is missing, they gippo the Control box to think that it has these things which means that there are maladjustments made to create a limited number of maps for the vehicle to perform to. Therefore runs rich all the time, timing does not advance **** as it should resulting in lack of power up hills.
Do you smell unburnt fuel at the exhaust? You've been duped like me. I've taken up the matter with the SABS because Hyundai have not followed the rules of our country, which say that cars that were introduced into the country after 1 Feb 2005 must have catalytic converters.
I can send you more info if you want.
