Thanks everyone, I'll have her look at both. I posted this in the Sonata forum. 2 good picks although we'll shop all brands if she wants. It's her office. ;-)

Previous Elantra experience is probably less than relevant after a complete change. I think the only carry over was the engine tranny, From what I've gleaned from reports the engine isn't world class smooth like the 3.3L is. BTW, I kind of like the Mercedes B200 and a friend of my kids' mother has one. She was over to them and that engine was noisy - like a restrained diesel. Anyway, I'm digressing. The engine is rough and the 4A isn't nearly as good as the stick on that model. If they do a hatchback like the I30 off of it, I hope they go to a newer engine design.
Does the Elantra use a timing belt? That might addect the choice right there even though it might only be $800 paid twice verses paying $4K extra.
Anyway, I'm going to suggest she try out both. She may not be bothered by the noise of the Elantra if it passes the highway test. I'm sure it'll fly for the city test. She doesn't want to spend much so in Cdn prices, it is $18-20K for a mid range Elantra to $24K for the Sonata I4 4A (I don't evenb think they sell manuals on the 4 up here). On the other hand a Honda Civic Hybrid is $26 and she'd be laughing in the city. Too bad that was her bad example highway car.
Anyway, her call and I'll synthesize everyone's advice but I'll have to filter on previous Elantra experiences since it's a completely redesigned car but the power train is reliable it seems at what sounds like a Honda Toyota level or close, otherwise they'd have redone the powertrain I'll bet.
I'm just helping her make an informed decision. She called me...
Thanks everyone, I'll tell her to try both.
