A freind's looking to replace her aging Infiniti. Small family, 1 kid, the car is used extensively for work - mostly urban. She's looking for an automatic this time due to a shoulder situation.

I think there's about a $4K difference or so.

If anyone was looking at both - what are the pros and cons to either choice?

does she want more kids? If so she may want the Sonata. that is the position I am in looking to trade up from my 05 elantra.

sonata is significantly larger in the trunk and with the I4 gets similar mileage.

My insurance on an new Sonata will actually be cheaper than my 3 year old elantra.

Just my thoughts...

Thanks everyone, I'll have her look at both. I posted this in the Sonata forum. 2 good picks although we'll shop all brands if she wants. It's her office. ;-)

Previous Elantra experience is probably less than relevant after a complete change. I think the only carry over was the engine tranny, From what I've gleaned from reports the engine isn't world class smooth like the 3.3L is. BTW, I kind of like the Mercedes B200 and a friend of my kids' mother has one. She was over to them and that engine was noisy - like a restrained diesel. Anyway, I'm digressing. The engine is rough and the 4A isn't nearly as good as the stick on that model. If they do a hatchback like the I30 off of it, I hope they go to a newer engine design.

Does the Elantra use a timing belt? That might addect the choice right there even though it might only be $800 paid twice verses paying $4K extra.

Anyway, I'm going to suggest she try out both. She may not be bothered by the noise of the Elantra if it passes the highway test. I'm sure it'll fly for the city test. She doesn't want to spend much so in Cdn prices, it is $18-20K for a mid range Elantra to $24K for the Sonata I4 4A (I don't evenb think they sell manuals on the 4 up here). On the other hand a Honda Civic Hybrid is $26 and she'd be laughing in the city. Too bad that was her bad example highway car.

Anyway, her call and I'll synthesize everyone's advice but I'll have to filter on previous Elantra experiences since it's a completely redesigned car but the power train is reliable it seems at what sounds like a Honda Toyota level or close, otherwise they'd have redone the powertrain I'll bet.

I'm just helping her make an informed decision. She called me...

Thanks everyone, I'll tell her to try both.

For what it's worth, we test drove a 2006 Sonata V6 right after we tset drove our 07 Elantra GLS. Now this might have been specific to this particular vehicle, but the Sonata felt so unrefined compared to the Elantra. Shakes and rattles all over the place, the quality of the materials was less than the Elantra, the ergonomics were not intuitive like the Elantra. It just felt terrible. It's a shame, too, because I've loved the styling of the Sonatas since they came out a few years ago. Mind you, the Elantra had 5500 miles and the Sonata had 14,000. But after driving the Elantra and then the Sonata, I didn't want to have anything more to do with the Sonata. I was sold on the Elantra.

But I would still tell her to at least look at the Sonata I4 and test drive it. She may be pleasantly surprised.

Finally had a chance to drive the new Elantra. FWIW I liked it more than my 07 Sonata. The one thing I really liked was the legroom.

Quality of build seemed to be ok but I only drove it for 5 miles soooooo,,,,

I had it narrowed down to '08 Elantra SE 5-sp manual for $16,200 and an '08 Altima S 6-sp manual for around $18,800. (Rebates have since been added to Altima).

My wife is a bike rider and was concerned about size of pass-through in trunk. The Elantra pass-through has an arch which narrows the useability of the pass-through. The Sonata's was less pronounced. With all the deals on Sonata, I actually ended up with the same price (and they have since increased the rebate on Sonata so it's probably cheaper).

Sonata doesn't get nearly the gas mileage of Elantra or Altima so that would be a factor.

Sonata is a much bigger, roomier car for passengers, and feels a lot more solid on the road. Elantra is a lot of fun to drive. It also has an i-pod jack, which is surprisingly annoying when it is missing (Sonata!!).
