Craig,

It cured every shifting hang up, upshifts, downshifts, letting off the gas and then punching it, cold acceleration. It's amazing how much better it is. I've driven about 150 miles since Saturday morning and it's like a different car.

Ah! I can't wait to try this fluid change! I'm going out to pick some up as soon as possible, how many quarts do I need for the V6 5 speed tranny?

Wymi,

I also have a Santy with the 3.3 and 5 speed auto, and it doesn't perform half as bad as the 4 speed auto. I'm pretty sure the tranny fluid change will help you out a little, but not as much as the 4 speed auto. BTW, the 5 speed takes about a quart more. Check the owners manual.

I did a drain & refill last year with the Hyundai ATF. I only noticed a slight difference in shifting (a little smoother). I was told to stick to the Hyundai brand for potential warranty issues.

Aerostar,

They can't deny a warranty claim if the tranny fliud you use meets or exceeds their requirements. See this link http://www.castrol.com/liveassets/bp_inter...ds_ImportMV.pdf

I have the exact opposite experience between my wife's GLS 4 speed transmission and my 5 speed. Hers is smooth, positive and shifts great, mine has a tendency to flare the rpm's when shifting at part throttle. I also get a hard lurch in to 3rd gear in the morning when the cars cold for the first couple times.

I am at 26,000 miles and will need to change it out at 30,000, so
after searching high and low for something that is Hyundai/Mitsubishi SP III compatible, here it is guys and girls a whole $3.99/quart at Auto Zone. Beats buying the Hyundai stuff for $7 and change a quart. It's Castrol Import Multi Vehicle Tranny Fluid and it's a Synthetic blend to boot. Here's the link.

http://www.castrol.com/castrol/sectiongene...ntentId=7028224

Also, they sell Coastal Multi Vehicle Tranny Fluid that compatible with our SP III. It's also a Synthetic Blend and only $3.39/quart. Here's the link.

I believe Amsoil is also SP III compatible. Here is the link:

"The 4 cyl. only uses 6.75 quarts total."

Perry, where did you get the above info? According to my owners manual the 4 speed holds 8.24 qts & the 5 speed holds 11.52 qts. I am going out today to pick up some Castrol ATF and hopefully do the drain & refill soon. I will get 10 qts & just save what ever I don't use for the next drain.

for a drain & refill, you certainly wont need the 8.24 quarts.. 8.24 is the TOTAL amount that the car can take.. you wont get 8.24 quarts out doing a simple drain & refill... to get anywhere near that, you would need to do a complete flush (which one cannot do without a machine).. you would probably be closer to the 6 qt level doing a drain.... (just my theory)

Perry's 4 speed holds 8.24 quarts and he got 5 out. With 11.52 quarts total in my 5 speed I'm thinking 8 or 9 would come out on a drain.

if i were going to do it, i would probably want the flush, just to get as much replaced as i can, especially since you don't really need to do it all that often...(once every 2 years or less)... i, personally, would pay the extra $40 or $50 for someone to do the full flush..

<--- not a DIY person for cars, for sure... dont have the tools, the space or the desire to do things myself.. heh (except maybe change bulbs, or really little stuff like that)

If I were you, I'd used Synthetic ATF! Castrol makes one (SP4)that you can use on hyundais. That's the route I'd take.

I could only find 2 Castrol Trans fluids that were stated for use for Hyundai SPII or SPIII on this product data page from their website.

A drain & refill takes 5 quarts. BTW, the Hyundai Service site shows the following:

Transmission oil Diamond ATF SP-III 7.8ℓ(8.2 Us qt, 6.9Imp.qt)
