If memory serves me correctly I think it was

AT = about 150whp
MT = about 180whp
Anything more and you need to upgrade clutch.

You can try changing you ATF to a synthetic, but I don't thin kthat will help. If your looking for 200+HP then do a swap first to a 2.0L then turbo.

Komptek you're the last person I would want to disagree with, but I gotta tell ya, I got a buddy with a 93 Trans Am running 700 horsepower to the wheels on the stock tranny, he needs to upgrade it to go more, but he basically quadrupled his HP and is still running a good street car... this is kindof depressing news for me & my car... BUT!!! I know a place that builds trannies... I'll have to work with them... I plan on having it built to withstand 350 HP... hopefully It will work out (I'm looking at right around 4000 dollars buuuuut.... it'll probably, hopefully be worth it)

Yah if your going to do that kind fo work to the car, do a swap, way more parts out there for a 2.0L than a 1.6L But yah Hyundai Auto Trannies are good, Believe some guy has like a 400HP Tibby or something crazy like that with a auto, guess you could do anything, just know that it might blow the tranny, but **** you all ready willing to blow the motor so what's the diff. Rock on man! Tune it!

it really boils down to how you lay the power down. auto trannies are actually better for more consistant E.T.s...dut to consistant shifting...alot of pro racers use autos....
if you are doing neutral drops and just out right abusing it ...yeah it wont last long and blow up....

would suggest getting an upgraded torque converter if you are gonna make some power with an auto
