Ive had a Trajet for a month now and am a bit concerned about a few things:

1) there is an occasional screeching from the engine, usually when starting up but sometimes also when taking off in first. Sounds like a fan belt or something ? Does this need to be looked at ?

2) more worrying, the main beams have dimmed considerably while driving. They go dim for a few seconds, then bright again. What could be causing this ? (Im not switching anything on in the car that would cause them to dim and was driving at a constant speed when it happened.)

Any advice ?

Try spraying some WD40 while the engine is running. If still perceive, replacing the belts is the only way.

Time to replace your bulbs...

Any advice ?

if the alternator drive belt is slipping it will not be charging the battery as it should, tighten up the drive belt or replace it with a new one if it's worn, also it would be a good idea to get the alternator charge rate checked to make sure the voltage regulator is not faulty

I thought the bulbs either worked or didnt. Can they be faulty ie; go dim then bright, without actually blowing ?

No replacing the bulbs wont sort the problem out , it sounds like you have either a faulty battery or alternater best thing is to get them both checked out .

Cheapest thing to do is look at the alternator belt that might be slipping as it may be worn , if so buy a new 1 they are not expensive . but a trict of the trade is to put a little more tension on the belt by moving the alternator slightly further away to add tension , if you do this and start engine and the lights dont dim you know its the belt if it does not improve and theres no screeching it could be the alternator.

Hope this helps
