For anyone interested here’s my review of the Tucson. Model Feb 06 Diesel Manual "Arizona"

I bought her in August 06 with 22,000km on the clock and went past 46,000 yesterday, so 24,000 km driven by me in one year.

Overall I’ve been very happy with the car and found her tight enough for city manoeuvres and steady at motorway speeds up to 170 km/hr (in parts of Germany where it’s legal…). She takes 5 adults comfortably, good legroom at the back even with the front seats all the way back and I’ve crammed 3 oversize suitcases in the boot at once.

Loads of useful features like the rear seats fold down completely to leave a massive flat loading bed, the extra **** lighters in the rear and boot, or the shopping bag clips in the passenger footwell (I use it to tie back the GPS cable) and in the boot. The cargo net in the boot stops small items from rattling.

I do have some gripes however. The fuel consumption currently reads 7.9litres/100km but I found I can make at best driving (motorway around 130km /hr all the way) almost 800km on 70 litres of diesel.. or closer to 9litres/100km. It sorely lacks a sixth gear but the later model fixes that of course.

Even at low speeds I find the gearbox somehow mis-matched to the car. While most diesels allow you to keep in higher gears at lower speeds, I find I often have to gear down as it can’t pick up speed and starts jerking.

I had test driven an automatic and once I got used to it found it lively and responsive but I can only imagine the fuel consumption would be worse.

The bumpers are very delicate. If you so much as touch something the lacquer scrapes off… I’d expect a bit more from this type of car but then I guess it’s common to all modern cars.

As I started off… overall I’m very happy with her, I’ve had no problems (touch wood) and service her every 15,000 km at Hyundai of course to maintain the warranty (3 years here in Luxembourg). These cost around EUR 300 each time.

I love driving her, even over long distances she remains comfortable… my partner says too comfy as she nods off within minutes of getting in the car :)

I’d recommend Hyundai, I think they are very good value compared to other marques, especially when you look at equipment levels.

Nice weekend all & safe driving
Steve

Hi Stevemus

Try adding a CR Powerbox inline and you will find that your diesel engine is more responsive as torque levels increase with lower revs and your mpg should improve as you use less boot to attain the speeds. I did this report some time ago when I had the lower BHP engined diesel Tucson- I still use the CR Powerbox now with my new 6 speed 138BHP Tuc and and am regularly returning 36-39 overall and 27/29 towing.

Hello to All Hyundai Tucson CRTD Owners. Vehicle Tested with the CR Powerbox is a 2.0 CRTD CDX
The CR Powerbox is a product that has been tried out on a Tucson for the writers benefit. It cost the princely sum of 109 Euros and the thing is the writer believes it actually seems to do what the information in the advertisement said it could do and it's modest cost also includes a 3 year Limited Warranty as well.
Firstly the writer is the type of person that no one in their right mind would call an engineer, the Powerbox was found easy to install although the German instructions are a bit vague if you do not speak German and it took the writer all of 15 minutes to install. The writer is a very sceptical person and he is careful over items he purchases, he recognises he should have waited for the Tucson to be checked out by others before purchasing one,(things have to do what they say or they are returned for a refund.(Nearly did that with the Hyundai but the writer acknowledges he enjoys driving it!)
Immediately after installation of the CR Powerbox it was noted that the engine seemed more responsive, the power seemed to be ready for instant action, It had gone from being a bit rough and somewhat hesitant whilst being driven, to being a real smooth operator. The accelerator seemed to require less pressure to obtain the speeds previously attained, and there seemed to be a smoothness that previously was hesitant in operation. Having just filled the tank it was the right time to try the CR Powerbox out.
The vehicle was driven at what the writer considers to be normal for Motorway driving, keeping to about 68 mph and increasing speed to overtake when required to do so and sometimes the odd burst of above 70mph. (you know what the writer means!!) Although when the weather reduced visibility speed was reduced accordingly.
The first trip completed over motorways and “A” roads at various speeds the mpg gauge (that American spec thing) was checked half way through the trip and was found to be showing 24.4. (29.28 UK) The trip completed and the Tucson’s guage gave an indicated 26.3 (31.56 UK) overall so fuel consumption was getting better!! The Tucson still had fuel remaining in the tank so a number of local short mileage trips to the Supermarket and into the local towns was undertaken, and a certain almost guaranteed amount of traffic congestion was encountered and the consumption dropped to 24.5. (29.4 UK)(ALL AS PER THE US GUAGE)
Later as the fuel in the tank got lower and the mileometer indicated that the vehicle had covered 401 miles it was refuelled and 53.0 Litres was placed in the Tucson’s tank refilling it to the brim.
The 401 miles on 53 litres gave a return of = 34.3498 mpg over varying speeds of between 5mph to 80mph (at differing times of course) and over many different types of road surface.
The US Guage gave an indication that the Tucson had returned an overall fuel consumption figure of 25.0 mpg US (30.0 UK) and was obviously really accurate! (Not)
Since that tankfull of city diesel the vehicle has been used part with, and part without the CR Powerbox, during the period with the gizmo box a return on the US guage showed 29.3 (35.16) and is the Highest that has been recorded to date! The gizmo was taken off after 130 miles and the tank now half full shows 25.3 mpg. (30.36) The engine seems to be less responsive and the writer feels it has returned to its as purchased condition. The writer has found that all of the figures above are an improvement on the previous ”best” by approximately 3.5-5.0 miles/gall
The writer has said that he noted that the mpg improvements seemed better at a constant speed of 60mph and the improvements in all cases where achieved when the engine was properly warmed up. Summing up, the writer firmly believed that this product works extremely well and he has mentioned it to others who have purchased the product and are in agreement.
A RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
The CR Powerbox is supplied by http://www.mal-electronics.com remember you can order via Ebay and ensure that you ask for one that has the complete wiring loom, and an English installation specification (unless you speak German well). Euros 109 includes the postage to the UK. (This was the last known price (as paid by the writer)- proper price about Euros 278)
The MD of Mal Electronics speaks and writes in good English.
Here is the information from that site using their English translated version.
CR-PowerBox for all Common Rail Diesel Motorenadjustable Power up to 25% HP, Torque +30% Nm max.

The PowerBox CR works by modifying the electronic signals that control fuel pressure produced by the pump in order to optimize engine performance. The PowerBox CR increases fuel pressure at the pump to maintain rail pressure in the mid to upper operating ranges. In effect, pressure accumulates faster in the rail and is readily maintained to deliver more power and torque. The PowerBox CR engages when rail pressure is at or above 1,600 bar or 23,000 psi. The PowerBox CR includes plugs that are compatible with those originally installed in your vehicle. The PowerBox CR is easily installed directly to the common rail pressure sensor. With the instructions provided, an inexperienced driver can complete the installation in 5 minutes. The PowerBox CR will not override the safe operating parameters of your engine and does not change or interfere with ECU functioning. Other features are highlighted in the product overview below. Product Overview · For all cars with Common Rail Systems · Up to 25% increase in power and 30% increase in torque · Improved fuel efficiency (an average of 2.5 MPG!) · No interference to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU); original settings are not altered · Will not harm your engine, does not increase injection pressure · Can be installed by use of original plugs (no soldering required) · Will not alter engine diagnostics functioning, will not interfere with engine error code sensing · Does not change the service intervals required for your vehicle · 3-year limited warranty · Illustrated installation instructions included (Ask for ENGLISH version)
I wrote for the folks at tucson drivers dot commius (If the proper words used someone who is a hypocrite here change it to their site)I produced this to say about the type of performance booster I use. Others also wrote about similar items they purchased that do the same.

Hope this report helps

Itza.

Hello,

I have a 2007 Santa Fe 2.2 CRDI and my wife a Tucson and I happen to drive both from time to time. My wife is happy with her car, and did not want any modifications.
But I thought I could get more power and accelerate faster, and went for a Power Box. At first I thought the car's power was up. There is an uphill in my way everday that I often push down the accelerator on fifth gear and go with 145 km/h the most, I was disappointed to see that it was exactly the same speed after the Power Box (PB). The only thing I noticed after installing the PB was the changed response of the automatic transmission to the accelerator, the gear shifts down very quickly when you push the accelerator a bit, and this gives the sensation of a sports driving but I do not know if the 0-100 km acceleration improves or not, and this shift downs cause a rough ride. Also I have noticed a blue smoke every time I pushed the accelerator hard, which I never had before the PB. So I decided to remove it before it caused any problems (blue smoke from exhaust).
Then I asked myself 'If a very simple and cheap chip makes 30-40 bhp up without any harm, why silly(!!) engineers do not use it make their cars more powerful?' I did not know why then, but now I know, because it does not make an increase in horsepower or torque but only modify the response of the engine to the accelerator, and its net effect is, (I think) negligable... I do not recommend this (and any other device like this) to anyone as a driver who tried..

Thanks Deniz for your comments the only thing I would say is you just have not had the powerbox on your car for long enough.
The car has to learn how it responds to your right foot and then later it will definitely improve everything as I stated before- I rekon that over 100 diesel hyundais have bought this little gem of a box in any number of manufacturers names ( all german) and who are exceedingly pleased with the outcome.

Try it again my friend it will NOT harm your engine- whats a puff or two of blue smoke it could be your car blowing all the rubbish out of its system to show you your engine needed a clear out so that the little box could work its miracles for you too.

Cheers
