I just purchased an 07 Azera SE with the standard CD sound system. I am going to install an in-line FM modulator so I can use my MP3 player in the car.
Before I go prying around and brake something, I was wondering how to go about removing the dash trim so I can remove the radio? I did a search and didn't find any procedure listed. Can anybody help me out? Thanks.

Sorry I don't have any help for you. I'll be watching this thread closely though. I'm thinking about installing a Pioneer Avic D3.

Oh...and welcome to the Azera community! :57:

So...nobody here has had the dash apart on their Azera to get to the stereo? No Hyundai technicians here? Nobody here who has access to an Azera service manual? How terribly disappointing!

I know that several Azera owners have aftermarket stereos. Check the member garage for allmet33's Azera. But I don't know if any of these people did it themselves or had the HUs professionally installled.

I know that when I was pricing nav systems on Crutchfield it showed some installation instructions as one of the freebies. You might check there and see if you can buy the instructions as a stand-alone purchase.

There is a brief description in one of the posts here:

http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0dad43

"...No special tools are necessary to change the head unit.
The only time extra care is needed is removing the "wood" trim that runs across the top of the panel and over the glove box. Careful prying forward with a plastic trim remover pops the retaining clips free. The dash panel that surrounds the stereo is removed by unscrewing about 6 to screws.

The head unit itself is secured by a few additional screws.
The harness is unplugged and repluged into the new unit.
The entire change, including the learning curve, took less than 1 hour..."

and some more
http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0dad43/247
by allmet33:
"Remove the woodgrain trim at the top of the dash over teh radio (extends to passenger side of car), you will see 3 screw...remove them. There are two screws located at the bottom of the console, right under the cubby hole with the door and right above the ash tray. If you slide your fingers along that bottom, you'll feel the two openings.

The last screw to remove is actually located under the ignition and to get to that one, you have to lower the panel under the steering wheel. There is a screw located behind the fuse panel door that must be removed and then two screws at the bottom of the panel on each side. Once the screws are out, pop the panel down (it doesn't have to come all the way off) so you can access the one screw and remove that.

To remove the console panel...get a good grip on it and pull towards you until it pops off. Then all you have to do is disconnect all the harnesses attached to it. "

Wag,
were you able to get the dash off and install the FM modulator? I am planning to do the same. I would appreciate if you can take some pics of the process and post, so we can learn from it. Thanks.

I have not done the install as yet but I promise that I will take pictures and post them.
At this point I am debating on exactly how to remove the wood trim trim without damaging it, my wife would kill me!
BTW, from a design standpoint it seems a bit silly to have put that one screw underneath the panel under the steering wheel.

I finally found time to take the dash apart and install an FM modulator.
As promised, here are the pics that I took of the dash disassembly.
The instructions above from Megarock were pretty much right on the money.
You will need a stubby phillips head screwdriver to get at the two screws above the console.
After the screws are removed, all of the panels pull straight out to disconnect the retaining clips.
The yellow connector on the top right that goes to the seat belt light is a BUGGER to unplug. The locking clip (on top) that locks the plug into the socket is small, indented, and too short.
The pink wire going to the clock plug is powered ON in the ignition key ACC & RUN positions, I tapped into it to power the modulator.

Wag-

Many thanks for the great photos, they'll help a lot of forum members.

2 questions:

Are you happy with the sound the FM Modulatior allows for your ipod or satellite or whatever source you installed it for?

After removing the head unit, was the center channel dash speaker easily accesible for removal?

Once Anain, Many Thanks!

Re # 11 "Are you happy with the sound the FM Modulatior allows for your ipod or satellite or whatever source you installed it for"?

Great question. Odd that he didn't bother to mention if his efforts accomplished anything worthwhile.

Frankly, I would have been MUCH happier if I had a true aux input or even a good cassette deck (so I could use a cassette adaptor). But, given my choices, I can live with the modulator. It isn't great but it isn't horrible and it is MUCH better than ANY P.O.S. FM transmitter (I tried several of them)!
Was it worth the effort? I'd have to say yes. At least now I can run my I-Pod through the stereo and it sounds almost as good as a better FM stereo station.
The SE doesn't have a center speaker.

Since the system will play MP3 and WMA files on a CD why not just put your files on a re-writeable CD? I put over 500 songs on one CD using the WMA format. That gives you benefit of accessing songs thru the LCD display.

It's a little bit more work to X-fer them onto a CD but much less than opening the dash.

WMA has a higher compression ratio but MP3s will work as well but with less songs on the CD.

I haven't tried putting music on a DVD but I don't see why it would not work. With a 4.5Gig DVD in WMA format you could get all the songs written since you were born.

Ohh... threw me for a second. You have the '08 w/ Nav, so you can use DVDs. I think the Infinity Logic7 system in our '07s only reads CDs, and only reads MP3s.

I have burned MP3s onto a CD and popped it in, and worked flawlessly. Shows song title & info and changing "catalogs" (like for XM catalogs) changes folders on the disc. Pretty slick. Feed 6 CDs in there with MP3s and you come up with just about 1 DVD's worth of space. Still; 1 DVD or 8 CDs worth of MP3s is a whole heck of a lot of music.
