I'm having a problem when accelerating and revving too high but not picking up speed. Latelly when i try to accellerate and push the pedal down to go faster it will sometimes rev really high but not pick up speed.

Like for example i was going 60mph and was about to pass a car but when i accellerated to go faster the rpm meter rev'd all the way to the right and did not pick up speed.

It's a 97 tiburon automatic

What could be causing this? Is it a problem with the transmission?

Additional Details

I changed the fuel filter under the hood a few months ago and the transmission filter and fluid was changed out last month too.

Could it be a bad or dirty speed sensor?

If you haven't fixed the problem yet I'd have to say the torque converter and/or transmission need to be rebuilt.

sorry to be off topic, but where if the fuel filter located under the hood, are there 2 of 'em, one on the pump and one under the hood?

There is 1 fuel filter for the elantra and should be located under the hood near the brake master cylinder. If need be just backtrack from your fuel rail.

Yeah, sounds like a tranny problem. It's the same thing a manual does when the clutch slips between gears. So when your car try's to downshift when you stomp on the gas, the gear slips.
