I have a 2002 Hyundai Elantra GT (which I had since it was brand new)

Currently I have 99,000 or so miles.

I have replaced both the headlights with in the last 6 months or so.

I have a couple of questions that I hope someone can shed some light on.

1) When i press the brake pedal. The dash backlight comes on. Is this supposed to happen? I don't recall it before.

2) This is the most pressing issue. Is the Cruise Control some how tied to the Headlights. My cruise control will not work when the headlights are turned on.

Thanks for your help.

UPDATE: I am not sure if they are all tied together, but I recently had new brakes installed and now when I turn on the lights the brake lights (including the 3rd light) are always on. This may be a sign of something improperly installed. Does anyone know if there is an electrical link to the brakes? e.g. ABS sensor. That could have been installed incorrectly to cause this issue?

You have a short somewhere in your system. Check all the bulbs and headlight wires to make sure you don't have any exposed wire or wires touching that shouldn't be. This happened w/ the lights on my wifes car and it was due to two of the filiment wires in one of the bulbs touching that shouldn't have been. Every time she would brake the car would shutter and all the interior lights would flicker.

Bdiggy,

Thanks for the thought.

All the problems turned out to be related to a Tail light bulb that the Filament arm for the lights had melted down (still intact) to touch the brake light filament. The result caused the brake lights to be on when the headlights were turned on and thus disable the cruise control.

Simple yet strange problem to solve.

I had the exact same problem. In my case the cruise control stopped working and I had a tail light out at the same time. After replacing the tail light bulbs it worked fine. The first time though I did not install the tail light bulbs correctly and when I pressed on the brake the dash lights would come on and the tail light and 3rd light would stay on bright. Very strange. Check the tail light bulbs to make sure you have right model and installed correctly.

I just dealt with this same issue. The cruise control light shows in the dash when the cruise control is turned on, but the cruise control will not engage. Also, the extreme left side of the (3rd) high mounted brake light is on all the time when the engine is on. In my case the brake light portion of both of the 1157 tail/brake light bulbs was blown. The extreme left side of the high mounted brake only comes on when both tail/brake bulbs are blown. Both bulbs have to be blown to disable the cruise control. A single blown tail/brake light bulb allows normal operation of the high mounted brake light and cruise control. Go figure. Upon replacement of the the bulb(s), the cruise control was back to normal as was the operation of the high mounted brake light.
