I have recently bought Santro-2002. This is my first car with an EFI engine.
My mechanic has told me this procedure to start this car because it is EFI;
1) Take ignition key to ON position, the "Check engine" light comes on and and a noise of some motor running is heard from the engine.
2) Then after about 3 seconds this light goes off with the click of a relay and then start the engine by turning the ignition key further to START position.
Will any one tell me what is this process that takes place before an EFI engine is started?? Why we have to wait for the "Check Engine" light to go off???

Dear Junaid,

When you turn the ignition key to the "ON' position, the engine computer does a quick self diagnostic including turning on all the warning lights on the dashboard. These will go off after the engine starts if all is operating properly.

the noise you hear is the electric fuel pump pressuring the fule injector galleries.

Your car can and should start without waiting for the 3 seconds, but the 3 seconds is the time for the fuel system to fully pressurize. Your car will start on a properly operating engine with partial pressure in the fuel galleries.

What size engine is in the Santos/Atos? We can help you get an owner's manual in English.
