You'll probably get few horses out for this mod if you don't mind the noise... :)

Dear sherifs,

Modifying your exahust is a a tried-and-true method for some cheap horsepower gains. Modifying from the catalytic converter back (CAT BACK) systems are very reliable to not cause problems with your engine computer or check engine lights You should plan to increase your exhaust pipe not more than 1/2 inch or 12 mm in diameter to avoid a drop in engine torque.

Changing the muffler alone on a 1.6 liter I4 engine should add 3-6 horsepower, but that is all.

As far as how big is your current piping...probably 1 1/2 inches or 38 mm diameter but you can check this easily under the car with a piece of string around the exhaust pipe and use the formula " circumference= pi x (diameter)" or circumference / pi = diameter

thanks alot for your advice .. wht about the header ? i was told the 4-2-1 headers give more gains in the low - mid rpms .. and the 4-1 give in the high end .. so i thought about the 1st choice .. but will it increase my horses if i havn't done any major mods yet ?

Dear sherifs,

You are correct on header choices: 4-2-1 increases your low to midrange torque curve, and the 4-1 increases your high rpm torque curve.

You will see some minor horsepower gains from the headers coupled to your factory exhaust, but the exahust pipe is still your 'bottleneck' for efficient exhaust scavenging. Only by changing the exhaust from the catalytic converter back will you realize the full horsepower gains of the header.

Most people start with the cheaper exhaust modifications from the catalytic converter back before the headers for this reason. It is also cheaper!

Byron

Hey about your headers... i just had 4-2-1's put on my 2000 tiburon and let me tell you it was a pain in the ****... depending on the circumstances the headers might need to be modified to fit your car even if you bought them as "direct bolt-on's" mine needed the holes for the head bolts to be redrilled due to the heat of the engine cuasing it to expand over time, and if this happens to you expect to pay as much for installation as you did for the headers, mine was around 300 for installation alone.. Plus be carefull about your 02 sensors. Make sure the headers you buy have spots for 2 if you need it, mine didnt and it ran like **** till i got it fixed. but after all the hassle it is a nice upgrade if your willing to deal with it. I also have the stock exhaust pipes and muffler on with these and it showed a lil gain but im hoping to get a catback put on soon.. let me know how it is if you upgrade first!
