When you had this enclosure in, how much bass was there? I really like the size of this box, but am hesitant about mounting a sub to the outside ot the box. I have a MTX 10 inch sub. Would that work alright?

The set up is capable of quite a bit of bass, but it was all dependent upon how much power you push through it and if the sub is designed for being used in a sealed enclosure. It orginally had an internal volume of about .9 cu. ft. (when i was using the PG Xenon sub). When I switched to the Alpine Type-R, I inserted a baffle that took the internal volume down to .5 cu. ft. (recommended for that sub). If you have a sub in mind, the design can be changed to accomodate that sub. With 450 watts, it was definitely enough to make the whole car shake when the bass dropped.
Personally, I loved that enclosure because it allowed me to be able to fold the rear seats down and still pass stuff through. The sub sitting up to the one side really didn't take anything away becasue I made sure it was on the side with the smaller opening. With that enclosure in the trunk, I was able to pack luggage for 5 people for a week's stay @ Disney World and it all fit.
Oh yeah, and it still left room to access the spare tire without having to move it out if the way or anything like that too.
I no longer have all the dimensions for the box, but I can easily help you design one. What I did for the shape of the top and bottom pieces was pulled the trunk mat out and used that as my template. After that it was about cutting the walls 4" high and creating the cut-out and well for the amp to sit in.
To answer your last question...yes, the MTX 10" sub would work fine in that set up.
