I was just at my dealer for an oil change and noticed the new '07 lists MPG as 28/34. I find that hard to believe. It's well documented how easy it is for automakers to game EPA tests (i.e., Honda Odyssey EX's famous false rating of 24/30 which actually is 17/20). Can anyone who owns an '07 confirm the actual MPG?

Dear Jay, Yes, the 2007 Elantra can get 28 mpg city and 36 mpg highway once the engine and transmission are broken in. http://www.hyundaiusa.com/vehicle/comparis...20458&year=2007http://www.decaturdaily.com/decaturdaily/o...s/060109a.shtmlhttp://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/02/epa_mpg.htmlto get that mileage, you have to follow some rules. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/driveHabits.shtmlOnly one passenger weighing under 250 lbs. No baggage or excess weight in the car. Not exceed 56 mph in city Not exceed 60 mph on highway. Air conditioner off. Windows closed. Tires inflated to 35 psi. Relatively level terrain. Use the cruise control. Byron

there's another thread in this forum that relays real world MPG, sorry I didn't catch that. before posting this.
But incidently, it really bothers me how even Hyundai is now using those strict EPA conditions to determine fuel economy. It's like an engineering exercise being used as corporate marketing, it's so intentionally deceptive. I mean, who cares what the theoretical maximum is for fuel economy? To be honest, they should post a range, like "vehicle loaded with 4 occupants and luggage with AC on in hilly city streets" and then "zen-like perfect driving conditions". Then it would be honest. We could just pick a number in the middle and have a good idea what the real MPG will be.

The new EPA criteria for reporting are infinitely more applicable to driving conditions in 2007 than the old criteria. I think the hwy portion of the testing sees speeds up to 80 mph, and the city portion has higher rates of acceleration. I also think they use vehicles with a realistic number of comfort options like A/C (running) and power accessories.
What's really weird is, after driving my Elantra (and it's way-off speedometer) during the week, I drive a lot slower in my wife's Ford Escape on the weekends. I think it's because the Elantra is so quiet, I drive the Escape at a speed that makes the same amount of noise, which in the Escape, is much slower than the Elantra. Like I said, it's weird.

I'm on my third tank in my '08 and am getting a consistent 28 mpg just normal driving around town, no special effort to conserve.

The number sounds about right with my experience with my 07. I've had a lot of miles on it, 30k, and currently my driving is about 65% Highway, 35% surface streets and I'm getting around 33 mpg.
I actually drive like a normal person not a slug like the old MPG estimates require.
The 28mpg is pretty reasonable.

" On a closed course with professional drivers?" How about a car stripped of all non-essential equipment, and driven at a constant 25 mph? How about downhill with the engine off? You simply MUST have rigid rules if you are going to allow fuel mileage a place in advertising. Wheteher the real world mileage is the same is a different question. The benefit to fourm like this one is to get that real-world information.
