Hey Hi everyone sorry I have some bad news. My 2002 matrix from Singapore just started giving some transmission problems. It happens when the engine is cold. The car has trouble going into gear and then the check engine light comes on but when the car gets hot and we all know how fast that happens the problem seems to go away. Well any way I had it checked and they told me that I may have to do some re wiring from the trans to the engine (WHAT..........?) and off course change the trans oil. I was told to get diamond sp III but no luck. I had to get Castrol aps+4 instead. Does anyone out there have or had the same problems. Please let me know what you did to have the problem fixed. I hear the trans on these cars give problems after the first 3 years........

Dear corey,

We don't have Matrix in the US, but will try to help since you have the Beta II 1.6 liter engine.

My owner'smanual says "Use HYUNDAI GENUINE ATF, DIAMOND ATF SP-III, SK
ATF SP-III when adding or changing fluid."
Hyundai SP III fluid is recommended, but your Matrix will do fine with any fluid that meets SG or SG/CD standards. This is written on the bottle label. Castrol ATF +4 is certified for Hyundais!

Since you are in Trinindad, you can take advantage of online parts ordering.

Please get us the Check Engine Light code(s)! You should not have to re-wire the transmission, unless a previous owner butchered the wiring and you have to undo this work.

The forum has a lot of information on the speed sensor in the transmission going bad, but the check engine light will TELL THE STORY on what is wrong. Also, a Hyundai dealer can connect a SCAN tool to the transmission and run a complete diagnostic that will give you a written report.

Don't let your mechanic convince you to let him start rewiring anything on your Matrix.

Byron
