Hi,

I have just purchased a 2003 Trajet GSi CRTD from a private seller in Northern Ireland.
The service history I have tracked down (since it was not stamped in the service book) even though it was done by Hyundai dealers (in Dublin) does not include a timing belt change. There are 90K miles on the car.
A local Hyundai dealer in Northen Ireland quoted me £300 plus VAT to have a timing belt change.

I was so shocked at the price that I did not ask them waht it included.

Now that I have picked myself off the floor (it may not be too bad if it covers other related parts and labour).

What related parts should one expect to be changed in a timing belt servvice for the GSI CRTD 2.0 Diesel?
I have read posts that include Tensioner and water pump (for differnet engine makes).

Does anyone know where I can find technical/mechanical information on how this procedure is done for this model?
I have seen some great posts on other models but I doubt if the engines are similar enough to mine for them to be meaningful.

How many hours would it take to change a timing belt on this model?

Thanks for any feeback.

Hi randal

You have been subjected to the Trajet timing belt shock .

I see that you recovered . Once you think of it as something

that you do once every 5 years , for a good car , I believe

it is worth it .

I provided the forumers with information on timing belt change

but for a different engine .

Good luck

Hi Randal,

As a potential buyer, I never see many trajets in the garage - I thought it was a reflexion on the cars....but I guess the cost of servicing must put users off too!
I like the idea of the van like size and shape, though I am also considering a larger estate

I would be be dubious about the service history especially if there hasn't been a timing belt change. I would seriously consider changing the timing belt right away. Do you drive many miles each year?

You asked the question "Does anyone know where I can find technical/mechanical information on how this procedure is done for this model?" - forget about RTFM as it takes a bit of skill in changing timing belts especially if you are not mechanicaly minded.

Get someone who knows what they are doing to do this. If you/they are changing the timing belt change then it would be worth changing anything else that might need changed when the engine is stripped down at that time. I did the same with an old datsun a few years ago and saved money that way (as I was diong 36+K per year.)

Is it necessary to go to the Hyndai dealer? Surely at 90K there wont be any manufacturers warrenty left. You should go to a privately owned garage, (VAT registered) and get receipts for all the "genuine" hyundai parts used.

Typically you could expect to be charged from £17.50 per hour for a private mechanic up to £50-ish per hour for a dealer. With 90K on the clock I know what I would go for.

Regards Chips

70k for a 2003 Trajet cambelt service. Pulley and tensioner are only changed if faulty. About £170 plus Vat extra for the idler pulley and tensioner if needed.
Labour Time is just over 4 hours.
At 90k if anything breaks you will be okay with warranty. You are in fair wear and tear territory in relation to the warranty so beware and they will look at the service book at that mileage if anything goes wrong.
