Anyone out there know if oil pressure switch is a problem with 88 excel?1.5L I opened hood and there is oil all over the alternator, and the drivers side of engine is ''soaked'' with oil. I started driving to work the belt was screaching and alternator started cutting out so I turned around and took my Jeep to work. It is cold out and because engine is so dirty with oil I can't see where it is leaking from. It took 1.5Litres of oil to fill her up so I assume its been leaking for a few weeks since I put her on the road. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry for the delays mate.

Have you checked that it's not your oil filter that is leaking???

I suggest that maybe you should degrease the engine and take it for a drive and then inspect iot on your return.

Thanks for replying Dr. Hyundai. I did check filter Friday and sure enough it was not tight. I noticed a few drops running from it before I tightened it up so I am not sure if that was the main problem. The filter is located next to the alternator so that would explain all the oil covering the alternator and of course the belt would cause the oil to ''spray'' all over the place. I suppose under high speed pressure would cause the filter to leak even more so hopefully that will solve the problem. I will give results in a week or so. Cheers!! :P

Just to be 100% sure, I would replace the filter so that you have a new seal.... ya know just to be safe!

Thanks Doc I will do so when it warms up. Today it is -24c and windy so even 5 minutes work under a car is no fun. Cheers

Hi, wandered into the group due to a slow day at work. I've owned several of the original Excels covering all model years. The oil pressure sender is located on the front of the block, below the alternator. It was a common failure for the sender to go bad, and make the exact mess you have under your hood. I've even seen a few of these missing entirely due to deterioration.

Look at the block below and slightly "behind" the alternator, and you should see a single wire connected to a (probably very nasty looking) brass pressure switch. This will be the sender. I do not recall the size of the wrenches that this part requires for r&r, so keep several sizes handy. It's simply a matter of unscrewing the old one, disconnecting the wire, and then screwing in a new one.

Also, what trim level do you own? If you don't have a factory tach, you can easily install one in place of that huge and rather cheesey looking analog clock, or blank plate if yours is a base model. They simply bolt in and work without messing with any wiring.

If you don't have the digital clock in the top of the dash, they install just as easily. The plug for the clock is behind the blank plate.

I used to love messing around with the old carbed Excels. They may have been a bit cheesey as cars go, but they were easy to "personalize" using OEM parts.
