Even though I bought my 08 Elantra SE from a different dealer and out of state, my local dealer programmed my doors to open at around 15 MPH, and did so for free. They said that the slowest that they could get it work was at 15 MPH, so I have the feeling that if you want it to lock at a faster speed, you could have them do so.
I wish that the doors would automatically unlock when the ignition is turned off, but the dealer said that was not possible. Has anyone been able to get this done ?

I just had my auto-speed lock programmed last week on my '08 GLS. The technician asked me if I wanted the feature set to auto unlock when the ignition is turned off. I said that I did and it works great.
The dealer tried to charge me $10.75 for programming, but thanks to the advice from this forum, I complained about the charge and they removed it from my bill.

My doors auto lock around 20 km/h and they auto unlock after the car is turned off. I didn't ask the dealer to specifically do this. I only asked them to turn on the auto locks. I just assumed that you could only have it that way.

I'm going to the dealer next week. If they give me trouble about doing the auto door locking for free, whom should I call at Hyundai Corp? Thx.

Well I really dont believe they will...seems like most service depts know about it...just be sure to tell them you want the doors to UNLOCK too...Again, they dont unlock merely by turning the ignition switch OFF, you actually have to REMOVE the key...In case you need it, the pho no to HYUNDAI is 800-633-5151, just follow the prompts to talk to a human for technical advice...they seem reasonably competent...unlike alot of "customer service depts" Ive had to call...BTW (and completely OT) I live in Arkansas now, in the Ozarks, but I worked for YEARS in SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ...small world eh??
Just to try to clear the air about this, the HYUNDAI manual for the 2008 ELANTRA in sec 4-11 says "SPEED SENSING DOOR LOCK SYSTEM (IF EQUIPPED)..When the speed of the vehicle is above approximately 12MPH (20km/h) for 1 second, it will automatically lock all doors. For activation of this feature, contact an authorized Hyundai dealer." ..... BTW, after clicking the link up above, and seeing that it shows this as a SAFETY feature, it appears, that ALL Elantras ARE in fact equipped, and any dealer who tells you they dont know about it is plain ignorant, and worse, tries to charge you for activation of a SAFETY feature is just plain greedy...I would be on the phone to HYUNDAI so fast it would make their head spin...just be sure to get the name of the service manager, dont worry bout sales types...theyre out of the picture...

Hi all, i'm from singapore. Actually, This safety feature is available in all our rides. Its just that your dealers did not enable this feature in our ECU mapping. There are 2 type of autolock. 1. When all door are closed and turn the ignition to on, the door will automatic lock after approx 6 sec. (This is control by the alarm system) 2. If you start the engine without closing the door, the autolock by the alarm system will not activate. But, when your vehicle move to certain speed (20 km/h or 40km/h) the autolock system will be activated. This is control by vehicle ECU. Hope this helps

gravel, yer dealer is a jackass and I assume yer not gonna take that crap for an answer.....the phone number to hyundai is up above...its painless....and free...
truth be told Im fascinated by folks who have these cars elsewhere...not in the US of A...HYUNDAIS were being sold world wide for YEARS before they became "popular" here...I oughta know, years and years ago I had an EXCEL (remember that?) and a really early model SONATA...for sure, the cars made for overseas sale DONT meet US EPA standards, or Safety/Crash regs...not a criticism, fact...there are models of cars by virtually every mfg that look suspiciously familiar, but will NEVER be sold in the USA for that reason...
There are probably all kinds of other differences too...What makes a car safe in one place or unsafe in another is beyond me...but I CAN tell you that my SE (and I doubt any other SE or GLS) WON'T simply lock after 6 seconds with the motor running, or the key ON..I tried it...nada zip zilch...the doors WILL unlock by removing the key regardless...but I',m willing to learn...
BTW, I kinda thought we had all beaten this topic to death, but given the number of views, (almost 3k...how bout dat sportsfans) and folks still writing in about stupid dealers, I guess not....

Well, I took it to Maxon in Union NJ and they wanted to charge me! (Reason: I'm not the first owner of the car.) I said forget it and called Hyundai, who told me there's nothing they can do, and I should just call around to other dealers. Also, my speedometer is way off (3-6% depending on speed) and I was thinking I'd get this fixed quick and easy, but they said I already had the ECU upgrade. Is this possible?
