Trying to remember what the readline is on your car...what does the tachometer show? What does the owner's manual say?

The Beta 1 engine

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyundai_Beta_engine

is actually pretty hardy for a 4 cylinder. Your shift should depend on your driving style. You could shift as early as 2800 rpm for a slow acceleration and max fuel economy. You could shift late as 5000 rpm if racing in a SCCA Motorcross event. The top of the torque curve is 4900 rpm.
