The car has 53,000 miles. Should I change the transfluid or not bother now that I am over 50,000?

Yes, ATF chang should be done regularry at 30K miles at our type of driving (city, stop-start, temp changes of summer & winter.....)
BUT only use Hyundai ATF (SPlll), any other ATF will cause shift problems.

Yes,agreed with duke, get it change and flush the ATF and be sure to use SPIII ATF immediately.
