Hi

I'm aware that a similar topic's been discussed previously, but thought I'd raise it once again given my recent experience.

I was having my 1999 Sonata 2.0 (auto) serviced by a friend in London this weekend and was told that my gearbox oil was low. Tried to get a couple of car parts shops to find me some ATF SP-III, but they couldn't help. The Hyundai dealer wasn't open in Edgware Road, so used a half litre of ATF SP-III that I had in my boot and drove back to the Midlands.

Today, I phoned my nearest dealer in Leicester, who offered me Shell Donax as an alternative. When I asked if I could order some ATF-SP III, they said no, and told me that Hyundai recommends Donax!

So - do I go for the Donax or get some ATF SP-III the next time I'm in London.

Any thoughts?

Pls stick with SPIII. Can be from Hyundai SPIII or Mitsubishi's diaqueen SPIII...

Lately, Caltex also produces ATF woth SPIII spec, read here:

There is no alternative to SP-III ATF. The link goes to a page that has a universal ATF, not a special fluid.

I would only use SP-III fluid where it needs it only.

Valvoline maxlife ATF claims to be compatible with SPIII. I have not used it, I stick with Hyundai fluid. However, I do have confidence in Maxlife products, so I would use it in a pinch.

And yes, I am aware that claims of compatibility are NOT the same as meeting the specs. But it is nice to know you have options if needed.

Valvoline claims are wrong. Amsoil makes the same claims. Since they are a universal fluid, the compatability is not specific.

I only use the Hyundai fluid because that keeps the warranty intact. Hyundai issued a TSB about the ATF and it stated all other fluid, including those that claim to be compatable are not to be used. The company voids the warranty if/when that was added.
