Hi There,
I feel your pain. Interesting how I have a similar set of issues.
1. My power issue was due to a misfire (might not be yours) caused by a de-natured HT Lead (plug lead) on the far left plug (shortest lead). Just buy a new set of leads and replace that end one if it is. You can find out by pulling them off when the engine is running and looking for sparks in the tube when you remove it. When you take it off, the engine should get a lot more upset if it's working and there should be NO spark from the lead against the engine. Also, there should be signs of white marks on the end of the lead where it earths, but not always. If it does, it's a nakerd lead. You can bodge repair it by covering it in insulating tape (about 2 or 3 layers thick) right down the whole length of the lead. The heat of the engine seems to destroy them every 6 months or so, I keep spares in the boot lol.
2. Oil. I use 1 litre of oil every 3-4 weeks. I do a lot of miles (about 25,000 a year) but that is WAY too much oil to be using, yet no leaks. Have read things about the PCV valve or something. I need to look more into that, possibly speak to the dealer's repair team about it.
3. First gear just does not engage unless you are going at near stopped, but honestly you shouldn't need first unless you are pulling from stopped anyway. I've always found second does the job whilst moving.
4. Reverse probs. Yep, I get that where it feels like the cogs are fowling or something. If I dip the clutch it will let me drop the gear in, but sometimes this can give off a good crunch..... not nice.
5. Revs. Yep, resting revs on mine are bolloxed! Sometimes they sit happily at 800. Other times it goes really low, almost stall, then back up and down. You can watch the needle go up down up down up down, changing each second. I have tried to trick it by tampering with the throttle adjuster, this does not work however. You can make it work if you crank it on hard enough to kick in the injectors, however this puts you up to about 2000 revs. I can't seem to make it stay on anything between 1 and 2, it's either under 1k or 2k+.
6. I also use a lot of fuel for a car that size. Some days it seems to do really well, and others it uses twice the amount of fuel for the same trips. t makes no sense at all.
All these issues are niggling tho. I haven't EVER had anything major go wrong with the car, period. As you said tho, mechanics all seem totally stumped. It's probably for me because I can count all the lantras within 40 miles on 1 hand. And with the dealers prices it's easier and cheaper to buy another Lantra and steal bits than it is to buy new ones!!

Is there white smoke??? from your tail pipe? If so you have a bad valve, it is staying open due to being bent or is cracked in half and cant seal, which in turn burns your valve guide leting oil through.... thats what happened to me along time ago on my civic. As for the reverse thing change the gear oil but from my own experience in my 93 elantra reverse dificulties are typical. Cars like ours are so old ((obd1) old computers)they somtimes have malfunctioning sensors but it doesn't turn on the check engine light. Buy the repair manual and use a multi-meter to check if all sensors are within tolerences. Also pull one plug at a time and drive it, If it drives the same but the plug has a good spark your not getting fuel to that cylinder. My car has 240,000 miles on its (4g61)motor and doesn't use a drop of oil.

QUOTE(Madogi @ May 25 2007, 10:48 AM) with the gearbox its ur clutch and syncros with ur lack of power and usage of the oil u have a seal leaking into ur exsaust system and it leaks out only while u drive and u need to clean ur injectors im unsure about the revs i think its just the ecu computer being bitchy maybe but yeah i ripped my apart peice by peice till i found out what some of them where I clean the injectors regularly with strong fuel additive so they should be fine. I can even feel the throttle response get better just after I've run a tank through with the cleaner in, so that's doing it's job. I would have to agree with the oil problem, my exhaust is screwed and needs replacing (and has needed replacing for some time now whoops) when I can afford it. I'll get the garage to check the valve when they do the exhaust as I'm not keen on doing it myself! The revs is very very likely to be the ECU trying to trim out my manual throttle rest adjustment attempt, to try and keep a higher resting RPM. I have 2 40amp Amplifiers and ultra powered headlights so it almost stalls out with all the stuff on if I leave it to rest at 800/900 RPM.
