Any advantage or disadvantage of using 89 octane as opposed to 87 octane fuel for the 2006 Elantra ?

This is a little off topic and I am not even sure if I am allowed to post the following message or not.I wanted to post a message at elantraxd.com and I got a warning from McAfee Site Advisor that that site may cause a breach of browser security "In their tests this site attempted to make unauthorized changes to our test PC by exploiting a browser security vulnerability which could infect your PC"
What do the rest of you think of this ? I used to visit that forum because it is a bit more technical than this one is.

I think your security settings are set a little high. It probably just wanted to store a cookie or something.

As for octane, unless you have a driveability problem like pinging, I don't think the higher octane does any good. My understanding is that any performance increase will be nullified by the ECU which will adjust it out.

I don't think it had anything to do with my security settings because the message was that they attempted to make "an unauthorized change" to THEIR (McAfee) test computer, not mine. I have never received a message like this before on any other site I have visited and yes I was surprised. If I knew their e mail address at elantraxd.com I could perhaps ask the forum administrator if they could explain this .So Doohickie your virus protection isn't giving out any warning about this site ( elantraxd.com ) like McAfee is ?

Regarding the octane, what if the octane is a little lower than the stated 87,so buying 89 is sort of like an insurance against that happening. What exactly is "ECU" ,some sort of emission control ? So other than the extra cost there wouldn't be any harm in using the higher octane fuel but there wouldn't be any benefit either ?

The ECU is the Engine Control Unit; that's a fairly generic term for cars and I think on the Elantra it's actually called the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). My understanding is that it wouldn't hurt to use higher octane, but there isn't any appreciable performance difference either.

I visit EXD regularly, I have McAfee on my computer, and I've never gotten any security messages. But who knows?

Doohickie,do you have the latest McAfee update (it's free) ? It contains a feature called "McAfee SiteAdvisor" When I try to go to the EXD website I am redirected by McAfee to warn me that "this site tries to change one's browser" Could you do me a favour and tell the forum administrator at EXD about this and see what he has to say about this ? Then maybe you could let me know what they said about this.
Thanks,
Peter
p.s. If you rather I told them could you find out their e mail address ,so I could write and explain this.McAfee says that it is a "security threat " to go to that site and that going there could "infect one's computer".

well sorry to say that, but i'm really diasappointed about the quality of fuel in Canada and USA.so poor fuel can damage the engine, reduce the responsiveness in accelerating and generally the perfomance of the car, leave the compustion chamber really black! Last but not least, the exhaust-gases are far more than they should be and of course they pollute the environment even more!
In Greece (and probably in the whole European Union) you cannot find fuel with lower than 95 oct, plus the last 5 years there's a new one available with 100oct! i also think that oil comes from the same brands as in America: BP,Shell,Mobil etc. shouldn't this worry you a little bit?
it happens to know that american automakers also complain about it

The octane ratings and other properties of gasoline are as prescribed by the government. It's one of those "it's always been that way" kinds of things, and changing it would mean taking on the big oil companies. With a president who's an oil man himself, what do you think the odds of that happening are? The last major change in gasoline in the U.S. was back in the 1970s when lead was removed.

I have a short ram air intake, I use to use 87. Then I started using higher octane like 89 or 92... When I use a higher octance I feel my car performs better of the line and has better acceleration. Furthermore my car is an 06' 5-speed Elantra, hope this helps.

Any better mileage?
I just did my second fillup. I got almost 31 mpg on my first tankful with 70% highway driving. My second tank got me just under 27 mpg. Both tanks had around 70% highway driving with the AC on 100% of the time. The only difference I see would be the gas. I used Exxon gas when I filled up. I don't know what the dealer used but I need to find out.
I get better mileage from my 9 year old Cavalier with the AC running 100% of the time. Hopefully it's just the engine breaking in. I certainly hope this third tank isn't the same. It's Exxon gas also. If it is I guess I'll try 89 octane to see if that makes a difference.

If you read the owner's manual it will tell you that the engine in the Elantra(at least my 05) is meant to use premium. I experimented and found that i get better performance and better mileage from premium

Really??? Where does it say that? On Page 2 of Section 1, my 05 manual says:

"Unleaded gasoline with a Pump Octane Rating of 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher must be used in your Hyundai."

The Pump Octane Rating is what they put on the pump; in other words, it only needs 87 Octane (Regular gas).
