I have a 2004 Terracan 2.9 diesel auto which has covered 21000 miles in six months, it has been faultless except for the rear differential which is a limited slip unit, this has a loud whine at 75-80 mph it is also the second unit I have had fitted under warranty. Has anyone else suffered this and if so is there a cure as I drive up to 10hrs a day and it drives me nuts??????????

many thanks Hammy

Hammy, I'm thinking of buying a terracan and I'm a high mileage man myself. My concern is comfort over long journeys. How do you find it? I'll do 30k a year between Dundee and Manchester. I do a lot of fishing in remote spots- how do you find the handling on the wee windy roads? Does it sit happily at 80mph? Do you get decent fuel economy? I had a test drive but couldn't decide if it was right for me. Would really appreciate your advice.

Yes, we have replaced many diff centres at work.

The problem is that Hyundai were filling them with incorrect fluid causing them to flog out.
They are also being complained about, by shuddering. This to is related back to the oil causing the clutches in the diff centre to bind up and slip at low wheel differentiating speeds.

Go to your dealer, have them fit a new diff centre and the revised oil.

I bought my car as I'm 6ft 4inches tall and have a bad back, comfort is excellent. It will happily and very smoothly sit at 80mph all day I've pushed to 90mph at which point it simply wants to go even faster 104 mph top so far rock steady. Handling on the twisty bits is acceptable I've learned its character and its far better than the equivelant disco, trooper, shogun etc. She is also very good on tyres 30k up now 5mm left on fronts and 7mm left on backs (original) also 28mpg @ 80mph with a good load on tools in the back all the time.

my advice go for it, hammy

Hi guys a quick update on my diff whine problem, at my last post my third new diff was whining despite new oil. Hyundai asked if I could let it develop a bit so they could investigate further for me this I agreed to.

During this let it develop time I gave my terracan some "hard work" to do towing a couple of 2.5 ton plant trailers over a few hundred miles and going on holiday towing my caravan over 1500 miles. This work has had the effect of totally silencing my diff my new diff has now done over 20000miles and is totally quiet.

For info purposes my terracan has now done 55000 miles in 18mths and other than the diff not a problem so I am well pleased it just seems to get better as the mileage goes up.

Saving my pennies as 60000mile major service nearly due???????

Hammy :)

I believe that the can's quality control is pretty ordinary.
Bought it June 2005. Had a thump / shudder in diff that was noticeable around 12000 kms.
Got worse.
Replaced transfer case.
Improved but still not right.
Relaced diff. Car undrivable.
Eventually found that Hyundai had put the wrong diff in at factory.
Apparently there is a difference in the ratios of petrol to diesel diffs in Oz.
New transfer case and the correct size diff it all seems to be ok.

Cost:
2 transfer cases, new diff and about 3 weeks of the road and 20000kms of shocking driving.

If anyone else is having this problem check the ratio of the existing diff.
It may seem like a long shot but it does happen.
