Hi guys,
So saturday i finaly took the thing apart and I found out that the connecting rods are gone...

Ive heard that you cant take the piston off without screwing it and that the NA has different connecting rods..

Is this true, in the HMA manual there are no diferences between the connecting rods, only the pistons.

I have some NA connecting rods that are ok and its not soo expensive to get new pistons... but connecting rods are darn expensive.................

it all depend on what type of engine is in your car. North american cars might not have the same motors as in europe.

Its a european motor, the thing is that If the rods are the same - they look like they are... then I just need to get new pistons and pins and put them on the rods...

so I need to know if there is a difference in material or dimensions of the NA rods and the Turbo rods.

In the manual it looks like they are the same, the difference is in the pistons. but who knows...

I had a NA scoupe, and then bought a turbo one for a full rebuild to go for big power. I rebuilt it as standard to start with, but with everything new except head, block and crank.

Unfortunately if you have an alpha engine, then the gudgeon pins are pressed into the conrods. And everywhere you take them will say to you "we can try to take them out, but there is a possibility that we break them, and if we do, it's not our fault"

So the first problem is with getting the pins out. I know for a fact, due to my recent work, that you can get the gudgeon pins out and leave the pistons and the con rods intanct....IF you have the right support jig for the piston and the conrod. However the only people that have these jigs are the main Hyundai dealerships...and so you will have to take the rods to them to have them done, and they will charge £36 (around 50Euros) just to press all four off.

Then i would suggest for sake of future reliability (and bigger boost) that you go for new pistons...which lovely Hyundai send you a gudgeon pin with :D which retail at £25.43 (around 35Euros) each...so a set is about £100.

With these new piston rings are an essential if you don't wish to take it apart again soon. these are £90.13 (around 140Euros) for 4 compression rings, 4 secondary rings, 4 oil rings, and 8 oil ring retainers. (enough to do all four pistons :D)

The you will have to send the lot back off the the Hyundai main dealership, and bend over for the £36 that they will charge you to press all four back onto the con rods :(!

DO NOT attempt to remove the gudgeon pins from the rods yourself....if you use a press you will bend the conrods, as they will not be supported correctly, and crack the skirts off the pistons leading an imbalance, and therefore bore rattle, followed by egg shaped bores! (not good) And if you heat the rods up to try and bash them out (due to the expansion of the rod) then you will weaken them beyond further use again...as soon as you hit WOT (wide open throttle) on boost, then you will snap the lot (again...not good)

Oh, and for the topic.... All the dimensions are the same for the NA and the turbo conrods. I used the NA conrods in the turbo block, with turbo pistons, and they are the same. And the engine ran lovely too!

The con rods are £63.73 each (around 95Euros) Which isn't a bad price.

Also...whilst you have it apart it is worth checking the big end bearings (in between the crank, and the conrods) as these tend to die at around 100k miles. If you change them before they die, it is fine, however, if they go they will take your crank with them!

The bearings are £32.89 (around 45Euros) for two and you need 8!
A crank at current in the UK is £462.50 (around 700 Euros)

Take it easy

Thanks mate!

My friend managed to get the the pins out without damaging anything, he used a press and some soft wood.

so im saved. Cause the dealership said that the closets pistons are in korea so they would have to get them shipped and that is 4weeks! :w00t:

We checked a few of the big end bearings and they looked ok, So you rekon they need a change... its heaps of work and I dont know if I will get my friend to do that, I myself dont have enough knowledge...

jesus, check that the con rods are still perfectly straight or they will snap!

4 weeks is cack! All of the bits in the UK come from Korea, and they take only 3 days to get here!

If the engine is out of the car, then the big ends are easy to do, simply drop the sump off, then drop the shims off of the bottom of the con rods, slide the old bearings out. Clean the new ones in break fluid, and then slide them in! Lubricate with a bit of liquid graphite, and then make sure to change the oil after about 50 miles....

Same process to do it in the car but a little more fidely because there are more things in the way!

How much distance has your car covered?
How much service history has it got?
How often has the oil been changed?,

The bearings might aswell be changed if they have the slightest bit of abrasion on the surface that faces the crank. Because as I said before if they die they will kill the crank, which can be an expensive past time!

Oh,
I thought you ment the the bearings on the crankshaft,
I have a new set of bearings for the rods, no problem, thats a must! :D

The engine has done 180K Km the car only 60

Thats what happend, the bearing got fried and the conrod is gone. The crank looks ok, we still have to measure it though.

Awesome, thats what happened to the one I bought, run dry of oil, and span the the bearing into dust, and then the conrod ran no the crank for a bit! very very silly.

Ill have a look through my shed when i get home tonight, I had two full sets of OK rods, but I don't know what happened to them, if i can find a set, then you can have them. I'll let you know when I've looked.

Be most careful to check the crank, as if it has shrunk from having the conrod spin on it, then it will not make proper oil pressure when you put it back together, and will kill of the other rods very quickly! Not good.

I'll let you know about the rods later mate.

Im afraid i can't find either set of conrods anywhere mate, i've had a couple of good looks for them, and i really don't have a clue where they went. Sorry to get your hopes up mate, i was convinced that they were in the shed. Let me know how it goes, and if you need anymore help, then just shout!
