Has anyone looked into getting all the Hyundai factory components to add FACTORY XM to their Azera? I am not getting a lot of help out of the dealer on this?

My parts counter rep told me that Hyundai won't even price out the items unless they provide the VIN of the car it's going to. If the VIN provided does not show that the XM came with the car from the factory, they won't sell it.

I'm looking at an aftermarket unit now for my sonata---they are very cheap since the anouncement of xm and siurus merging.

I received an accessory list from Hyundai Owner Communications, Program Headquarters, 1753 Pointe Ave., Ontario, CA 91761. It specifically mentions Kenwood AM/FM/MP3 Player, Kenwood iPod Adapter, XM Satellite Kit. No model numbers are mentioned. I scanned in the sheet and attached it to an e-mail back to the parts counter where I bought my car. I will see if they can identify the exact units that Hyundai was talking about. I have tried to attach the scanned in image of the item to this post.

Mark,
I check in to this too. The cost is way to high, first you buy the head unit with XM. the dealer has to remove headliner cut hole in roof for XM ant. The dealer quoted me $800 for new radio, and about that to install. I added XM with a small unit about $50. and $10 per month. Do a search on XM and you can see how I installed the small XM, on other did the same.

Qman;

I might consider installing a unit myself if I could learn the Kenwood items that seem to be indicated in my post. There are alternatives to cutting holes in the roof. Some other locations for the antenna unit may not be ideal, but would certainly be no worse than using a portable unit sitting on top of the dash inside the car.

How is your unit connected or coupled to your car's radio? Or are you talking about a completely separate portable unit? :puzzled:

Joe,
Mine is cliped to the ash tray and ant. is run out the drivers door. Wire is tucked in under windshield seal. Power is plug into cig. lights, wire is tuck away.
The cutting of hole in roof is to install the factory head unit and ant. to look like it was original.

Qman;

OK, what brand and model of equipment are you using? Is this a portable unit? Does it couple into your car's original radio somehow? :puzzled:

Your installation method sounds easy to do and maintains the original appearance of the interior and exterior of your car. I like hiding the antenna lead under the window weatherstrip. Anything not visible is less likely to be noticed by thieves.

Do you have any pictures of your installation?

Qman;

Thanks once more for the nice pictures and details on how you did your installation. It gave me some good ideas. I like the 6-CD changer in the existing radio, so I decided it would be best to keep the OEM head unit. I found a good price on the Sirius Sportster 5 at Crutchfield and may go that route. I already have a Sirius account and receiver in my Dodge truck. The new Sirius Sportster 5 is supposed to have variable screen colors and creates less heat than the older Sirius Starmate 3 & 4. They can be connected to the OEM head unit either with a direct FM modulator at the antenna input to the head unit or using a plug-in cassette adapter and cable in front. The FM modulator arrangement would be cleanest. The cassette adapter would be the cheapest.

I need to figure out how to run a cable from my home audio equipment to my PC and record MP3 files of some of my favorite music. I would like to have the best fidelity, so I need to work on details.

Cheers! :clap:

Yeah, it's best to go with an aftermarket add-on of some kind. First, the Kenwood unit mentioned is a single-DIN unit, and it would look very out of place in the Azera. Secondly, if the car is not wiring for XM from the factory, which yours won't be because it didn't have it, then they'd have to run all the associated antenna wiring, SDARS receiver and DRILL A HOLE IN YOUR ROOF... that'd be enough right there to change my mind. We have a good tech or two in the shop, but there's no way I'd let any of them drill a hole in my roof. Too much room for error.

Don't be mad at the parts department, I'm not really quick to quote customers prices on this kind of thing either because there's just so much involved. I explain why to them, of course, but then usually just recommend them to the local company the dealership uses to add aftermarket cruise and such.

LilBean;

I agree. There is no way I would let someone drill holes in the roof of our Azzy either. Qman's idea of snaking the wire under the weatherstrip or trim sounds best. An alternate spot would be on the trunk lid using a similar technique.

I did find a number of after market head units that were double DIN on Crutchfield's website. Some of them are quite nice and permit setting up different colors on the display. The one thing that would be given up is the 6-CD changer that is built in to the OEM head unit. I even looked at some of the Navigation units too that would allow connection of a satellite radio tuner. Some of them are also double DIN and there are appropriate face plates and mounting hardware to go with them. One thing I realized after researching them is that I would still have to find some spot under the dash to mount the satellite radio tuner. There would be lots of extra wires and cables to deal with. That might be a good choice for a younger person to handle. At my age (65) I don't relish the contortions required to work under the dash much.

I always did my own work on electronics since I was in that field for all of my adult working years. I just don't trust most people to make connections to wiring in my vehicles like I would want them to be done. Fortunately after market radios now come with wiring adapters that make the job much easier and neater. Some will still use the crimp connectors that I despise though. I prefer soldering and using heat shrink tubing to cover the connection where needed.

There are lots of choices out there that will fit most anyone's pocket book and provide lots of hours of enjoyment. Have fun! :beer:

The little unit thats in my pictures also has 7-8 colors (back-lighting) in it. I would bacareful of using a double DIN unit in the Azera because of the rounded front face on the factory radio. Might look odd.

One more thing, on the XM radio antenna put some tape over the magnet then stick it down. It will scratch the paint when you go to remove it w/o the tape.

Yes, the double-DIN units would have a straight edge black plastic surround. It does go in at an angle, but would not be a perfect match. It might be possible to paint the surround to match the color of the OEM radio, but that is just more trouble. Even if that were done, the face of the after market radio would be black. That (along with ease of installation) is why I decided to keep the OEM head unit and just add the XM or Sirius satellite radio tuner.

I know what you are talking about on the magnetic mount antenna. I had a magnetic mount antenna on my old pickup and it scratched the paint on top of the bed rail over the years. Probably double-sticky foam tape would be OK to use with the magnetic mount antenna. :thumbsup:

Is it possible to reach the antenna cable plug on the back of the OEM radio by removing the glove box & lid? If so, that would make adding an FM modulator easy.

John;

No, the '06 models did not offer the XM satellite radio. It was offered starting with the '07 and later models. Your car is probably like our '07, with Infinity Sound system. It has a radio head unit that includes a 6-CD and Cassette tape player along with the AM and FM radio.

Ask someone to demonstrate satellite radio to you at a Best Buy or Circuit City or similar store near you. That way you can get an idea of the types of music and entertainment, news and other programing offered. They do have a wide variety of programing offered and there are no commercials! The sound is CD quality and noise and multi-path interference free. If you have satellite TV already you may have satellite radio channels included along with your TV channels. You could try those channels out at home that way. We have Dish TV and they include Sirius satellite radio channels.

The only downside of satellite radio when traveling is that if you go into tunnels or stay under long overhead structures such as overpasses for extended lengths of time the signal goes away. Once you clear the overhead obstructions the signal comes back. We find satellite radio to be especially pleasing when on longer trips. There is no loss of channel or fading signals and you can continue to listen to the music etc. of your choice the whole trip. :liebe011:

:)

If any Azera radio has factory XM, you will be able to tell by simply
looking at the toggle switch located just above the volume control.

FM/AM
-------
XM

These radios finally appeared last in the Ultra Limited models. The GLS and SE models had
'em first, and of course the Sonatas even earlier than that. Does that make any sense? :whistling:

When we were in the market for a new Azera, we had to settle for an SE because no Limiteds
had them yet, and I had decided we would not have any new car without a satelite radio,
and we are sure glad we've got it. We rarely use the Am or FM.

:)
