I have a problem with my H100 - 1995 model. The engine does not become warm even after long time driving. I have changed the thermostat but with no change. I have tested the thermostat in boiling water and it seems to open fine just before the water is boiling.
I have noticed that the radiator fan is running always - as soon as I start the engine - is that normal?
Should it not start when the engine needs cooling?
What other causes to my problem can there be other than a defect thermostat?
Any sensor somewhere to check?

Please advice if you could help me out here!l
Thank you in advance. :-)

the fan should not start up until the engine gets to a point where it needs to be cooled, once the fan has done this it should turn off again, the most likely problem that you have is a faulty fan switch

Thank you for your answer.
You might be right, but I dont understand quite how that can be.
Are you sure that this is the case for old H100 models?
I ask because it seems to me that the radiator-fan is connected to the same
wheel as the charger, with a fanbelt on its own, but still.
This fan is not electric and I dont see how it could start and stop
independanty.
If I try to rotate it with the hands when the engine is off it is almost stuck
and forcing it seems to try to rotate the fanbelt for the changer as well.

Do you have an explanation/suggestion for this?
:-)

l am sorry, l thought that your model was fitted with an electric fan (most are) if you have a 'rigid' fan then it is obviously not the cause of your problem. when you say the engine does not get hot what exactly do you mean? does the heater work o/k? does the engine and radiator feel hot to touch after the car has been running for a while? please give some more details so that we can try to help you

Here is what happens:
As I live in Norway and this happened during this winter it is obviously a bit cold outside (-5 degrees maybe) and when just starting the engine and leave it running without actually driving the car around the temperature indicator just barely indicate a rise in temperature.
If I leave it running (still without driving) with higher RPM it increases a bit more - but never up to let say 1/4 - where between 1/2 and 3/4 would be the usual working temp.

If I drive on the highway - in 5th gear with low resistance (downhill or flat) the temp. indicator is almost at minimum.
If I drive uphill - in 5th - the temp. increases almost up to normal, but as soon as I get to flat/downhill it lowers again.

Hope this gives you be better idea of the problem.

And thank you for your support so far! :-)

yes but you have not answered my questions, does the heater blow heat out o/k? does the engine and radiator feel hot when you touch them by hand? l am thinking that maybe the engine is running at the right temp. but the gauge is wrong. until you answer my two questions l can't comment any further

ok - sorry.
I just thought that as long as the gauge shows a variation e.g. when driving uphill it can be assumed that it works ok.
Some hot air is entering the car from the heater but not as hot as it should.
I am not sure about the engine temperature - as I have not tried to touch it - but the radiator is not getting hot at all. I touch it and it feels cold.

I was told by someone today that even if the radiator-fan is supposed to run all the time - it should trigger when the temp. increases too much. The fan should then run at a much higher velocity.
At the moment I am not sure if that is the case - that the fan starts at full speed as soon as the engine starts. As I dont know what the normal start-velocity is it is a bit hard to judge.
But, if that is the case, that the fan starts at full speed - what could be the cause for this?

o/k, this should be the final solution. some vehicles are fitted with a 'viscus' fan which as you have been told only cuts in when the engine gets over hot. with a viscus fan you should be able to turn the fan blades freely when the engine is switched off, if you can't do this (the fan is solid,as you have said before) then the 'clutch' part of the fan is siezed up and it will need to be replaced, this would be why the engine is being over cooled because the fan is blowing air over the engine when it is not hot

ok - that sounds like a logical explanation - which I like them to be :-)
I'll be replacing it and trust that it will solve my problems.
Thanks a lot for your time and and interest!

Best Regards

I'm planning to do a Change Oil myself, but am at a loss on what type of oil I should get. I seem to fancy CASTROL.

Any inputs please.
