Hi

My 2004 2.9 diesel terracan occassionally hestitates (feels like the engine is cutting out although no dash lights come on) when changing gear from 1st to 2nd and also occassionally does the same when cruising in 5th gear.

I used to think it only did it with the A/C on but this isn't the case.

Anyone else had this problem? If so what is the solution?

Many thanks

check you tyre thread dept front and back, and tyre sizes these need to be exactly the same or else the thw 4 wheel drive get conflicting wheel speeds, to test pull out the fuse for the ABS and 4wd and see does it stop. It normally cause a sensation like a missfire

Most likely to be fuel filter, had similar problems.

Its propably foreign material in the system. Can be anything from shot balls in the fuel tank to feul pump vanes blocking the injectors. Have it fault code read first then if there are no problems look at the fuel system

Like retropete, I had a slight hesistation under acceleration which was particularly noticeable under acceleration in 2nd gear on a hot day. I opened the air-cleaner box and tapped out the dirt in the air cleaner and sprayed carby cleaner on the air flow sensor and the problem went away. The air flow sensors seems to get dirty fairly easily and doesn't calculate the air flow properly particularly when hot resulting in not enough diesel being injected. The problem never happened when cold.

Thanks for the replies.

Interestingly when the dealer had it in it showed no diagnostic codes. Anyway the problem went away for a while after they cleaned the air cleaner although the technician thought it could be a dodgy accelerator switch.

After the 60K service where they virtually replace everything the problem went away completely then resurfaced at 67K miles. It's now gradually getting worse as it approaches the 70K service.

It does seem to point towards an air filter/airflow sensor problem. Hopefully with this addition info they'll be able to sort it.

Question?

When the hesitation occurs do your passengers say it feels like you are braking?

Cheers

Mick

Mick,

I have never had the hesitation to the extent that the vehicle cuts out or actually looses power. The problem I have felt at times is just a hesitation, more just sensed by the driver then felt by other passengers. Others out here is Oz have had problems with the fuel filter and fuel pump. This is however associated with the engine check light coming on and a complete loss of power.

I have this exact same problem. Mainly when i go slower speeds, such as when i turn a corner, as i accelerate out of it, it's like the accelerator does not respond for several seconds. It doesn't matter how hard or soft i press down on it, nothing happens until the engine "kicks in".

It does with me at the higher speeds, around 4th gear. I lose a moderate amount of speed, about 10kph in a few seconds.

I have replaced both fuel and air filters and I still have the problem, but I'll try replacing the fuel pump. I used to get a "check engine" light on but never lost power with it before.

It seems that the car is in fact braking! I found a thread on an Australian Hyundai forum where someone had exactly the same problem and it was traced to a faulty brake sensor. I told my dealer I had spoken to someone with the same problem and they have now found a faulty brake sensor and are replacing it. Hopefully this will solve the problem

Just an update, the dealer replaced the brake light switch and the problem is cured!
