When you engage 4 wd, the little lever next to the gear stick, and start to drive the hubs will automatically lock to give drive to the front wheels.
To disengage you need to set gear lever back to 2 wd and then reverse back a couple of car lengths.
Think of it like the 4wd lever only puts drive to the front drive shafts, the auto free wheel hubs then connect the hubs to the shafts.
Unlike old manual hubs, in old land rovers etc, where you would engage 4 wd, then have to hop out of the cab and turn the hub locks with a special tool.
The reversing bit on the galloper unlocks them again so that the front wheels are not driving the front axels and diff.
I assume that you know that there are two positions for 4 wd, first is 4 High, (lever to the right) normal gearing but 4wd, next stage is when you push the lever forward from the 4H position, this gives Low ratio 4wd, ie higher engine speed but lower wheel rotation speed, ie more climbing power up steep hills, this setting is also best for steep offroad descents, let the engine do the braking for you , feet off the pedals.
