Here's a pic of a turbo install on a Kia Rio5 which has the same engine and chassis as our Hyundai accent.

This setup was commissioned by Kia to show what is possible with the aftermarket. I assume this kit was designed by Alpine Developments

I wonder how much this would run in CND dollars, and what kind of HP gains we're talking. It obviously put a dent in fuel economy. It would be nice to feel a little more kick out of this small engine though.

Pretty cool. If my Accent was just a toy to play with (in other words, if it were not both my daily driver, as well as my source of income) I'd be up for trying it.

I'd have to guess that it would boost HP's from 110 to say 160 or 170 HP. You would certainly feel it. As far as fuel economy goes, I don't believe a turbo would hurt you, if you were not using the turbo (punching it hard enough for the turbo to kick in) very often. But then why have a turbo if your not going to use it, right ? :-) And this brings me back to > ...if mine were not my daily driver and source of income.

BTW, ive always been more interested in super chargers, which give you more HP's all the way through the power range. There used to be one company who claimed to make a SC for every vehicle on the road..... and if they didn't already have one, they could make one. I looked into one for my Toyota Tacoma once, which would supposedly give me a boost from 150 HP, up to 220 hp ! Pretty impressive, but if I remember correctly, it was like $2500, and that was 10 years ago.

Cool stuff though,
Peace,
Fish

Honestly guys making your own turbo kit isn't that hard. The only really difficult part is supplying fuel to the motor.

What you could use is a 13g mitsubishi turbo.. run you maybe 150 used (eclipse turbo)
get some universal piping.. or get some mandral bent piping at a muffler shop (200 bucks)..
piggy back ECU, or megasquirt.. you'd be looking at 400-500

And either highflow injectors, or a custom manifold with a 5th injector..
Manifold you can get made for about 200 bucks at a nice machine shop.

So you're looking at about 1500 total if you know what you're doing.. its not that uncommon to build a kit. We used to do it all the time on bmws and vws before anything came out.

Honestly the hardest thing to get done is the manifold.. you just have to find a shop willing to fab one, or modify an existing manifold.

Also have you guys tried contacting performance companies and get them interested in the Accent as far as performance is concerned? There is hardly any aftermarket and if there is enough interest they will make parts. I know that Bavarian auto, and several other bmw suppliers did after we created an interest in the m42 motored bmws.

btw i contacted alpine for shits and giggles.. just to see what they'd say
