I guess the big question is do you use them? I wouldn't be comfortable assuming that Edmund's test is accurate let alone relevant to a completely different vehicle. As tested, the margin of error is just too wide to say anything about small differences that will be less than 5% in magnitude. That part of the test should have been done in a wind tunnel.

Each 1% savings for us 15K a year 20 mpg avg drivers would be around $30 a year @ $4/gallon.

Keep in mind they are easy to steal. My cousin had a tailgate stolen. People steal weird things.

I personally like the way the cross bars look on the Santa Fe. It seems to make it look more substantial.

Part of the reason I purchased the Santa Fe was because I like the way it is styled and how every aspect of the vehicle seems to come together very nicely, not for the gas mileage.

Soooooooooooo, with that in mind, I think the cross bars will stay.

I know that people steal everything including the kitchen sink if it isn't bolted down. That's what insurance is for.

However, to each his own.

Bottom line, the Santa Fe, cross barless or not, is a really great vehicle for the money.

QUOTE(petejlpetejl @ May 31 2007, 12:57 AM)
[attachmentid=4024]Here in the UK we have been told not to use the Hyundai cross bars for weight loading but the rubber strip can safely be cut to allow the existing cross bars to slide forward or attach 3rd party cross bars such as those made by Thule. I have done this in order to carry bicycles on the roof.

Regarding the earlier information on removing the cross bars, thanks guys for the advice about removing the rear caps. For those who might need to do this sometime in the future I've included a picture that might help.

I would like to mount a roof box (Thule Pacific 500) on my vehicle however the supplier states that the front cross bar must be moved fwd. I would prefer not to cut away an of the in-fill or have to get the drill out to add extra holes in the side track. Is there any official line (i.e. from Hyundai) on what can be done to move this bar fwd?

Check out this thread.

Many of us have done this mod, including me. It is easy and very affective.
