I bought a 2007 hyundai entourage from lee hyundai in fayetteville, nc @ august. It has been in the shop 4 times for the same recurring problem and more. When the car temp heats up and is standing there i a lod knocking noise that sounds like two spoons tapping against one another over and over again. They changed the chain and the oil pump and it is now louder then before the fixed anything. They tell me its the computer adjusting the transmission and engine together.:( yeah right....when a engine makes a noise it is never a normal or good thing at all, there is a problem and they tell me its normal. They even had a district manager from atlanta georgia drive up and tell us the same thing. We drove a loaner car same make and model but diff color and it did not have that same noise and they even brought a second car and no noise. I stood there for 20 minutes both cars cranked side by side and the dealers said see there Its the same and tried to make me believe that it was the same noise when clearly it wasnt. I have a lemon. And not only does the engine make a noise the steering wheel pulls to the side and they adjusted the axles and it still does the same thing, the air bag always comes on saying it is deployed when its not, and the driver side door makes clinking sounds. I have 3 kids and it just seems like this car is about to break down on me in no time. I am just waiting for the district manager to let me know what the dm in california has to say about this problem....but I know one thing this is not normal. Anyone has the same problem please let me know if its normal or not because this is so frustrating. New car, high payment and loud noise...I should of gone to Honda.

Probably should have demanded another car. How many miles did it have on it at purchase? I've dealt with them (brought my XG brand new in 2001), and I've sworn that IF I ever buy another Hyundai, it'll be from another dealership. Take heart, there's competition coming across the street. Also, send a nasty gram to the home office or get the "Troubleshooter" involved. I don't think they want negative publicity.

you should qualify for the Lemon Law...3 or more times for the same problem.Check your manufacture warranty book. They want you to call Consumer Affairs at Hyundai and have a Consumer Affairs Rep try to resolve problem... and follow up with BBB autoline. I am in the process myself and this is step one....Corporate will do the same as District manager....blah blah blah and it s normal....also..bring van to local mechanics shop and see if they can confirm noise so you have documentation if you need to go to arbitration.....But you should qualify for Lemon Law!!!

does the tapping go away when you turn off the climate control sytem? I have a slight tapping that I traced to the compressor kicking on and off. Certainly nothing incredibly loud but enough to notice if you are listening for it

I wonder if you have a compressor gone bad instead of an actual engine issue.

I just wen through the whole BBB process and let me tell you it is a joke!! I have a 2006 Sonata GLS and it has a defect in it that causes a high pithced engine whine. I went to arbitration and won my fight where the Arbitrator said it was not a "characteristic" of the car and told hyundai to fix it. Hyundai did nothing and I went back to the arbitrator and he said that the noise while there did not substantiate a buy back or replacement and that Hyundai did not need to do anything. WHAT A CROCK!!!! Do not waste your time with the BBB, they work for the manufacturer

Just wondering, what oil filter is being used in your van now? Reason I ask is I just happened across a TSB from Hyundai about only using a genuine Hyundai oil filter, or engine knock can occur. See below. This TSB is dated in 2005, but I found it in the Entourage bulletins, and it applies to all Hyundai models. Don't know if this helps or not! (This is their story, and they're sticking to it!)

Was wondering if you resolved this issue yet? I too have an 07 Entourage and it has the same engine knock. The dealership is also telling me that it is a "known issue" and that there is no fix for it. :-(

Buy like 5 canister oil filters for you entourage at the dealer and ask for discounts since you buy many of them.

Fram announced making canister oil filters for Sonata 3.3L. I'm not sure about for entourage but I would still use geniune filters to make the warranty issue easy.

Don't use aftermarket filters. They won't give you problems but they use less of materials.

Aftermarket oil filters tend to have less surface area than genuine ones.

Update, I got mine fixed. They replaced the AC compressor with a newer version (AC compressor 1.2 ;-) and that fixed the problem. Knocking has gone away!

my air conditioner makes a knocking noise- sounds like an engine knock but goes away when the AC is off. It is slight- It does sound like something is wrong but it is not very pronounced so it could go for 50k miles as far as I can tell.

the oil filter idea is very interesting- doesn't make much sense that aftermarket oil filters in general can be blamed for making an engine sound like it will fail. Sounds like a great way to sell more oil filters.

20000 mile update-
over the last 4000 miles a whining noise developed that sounded like a ford power steering pump. I mentioned it to my dealer, they found a belt pulley bearing was failing.

After replacement the engine sounds more normal than it did when I bought it. the bearing must have been defective. Even startup sounds are normal where they were clattery and knocking before.
