A question to all Tucson CDX or GSI CRTD 6 speed owners:

If there is an improvement (in reality, not just what is stated in the brochure) in the fuel consumption of the latest Tucson 138 bhp, 6 speed box CDX or GSI over that of the older 5 speed versions, can anyone please comment on how much better (if at all!) it really is?

Or if you didn't have the older one before, and are unable to give comparison figures, please just say what you are now getting in mpg overall.

Many thanks in advance,
Will Owen

Having only really driven the six speed I can say that at 80mph its only doing 3000 revs and you dont need to floor it to get decent performance, 2000 revs is when the turbo kicks in and you get a kick in the back if you do give it a little welly. I do believe that the trip computer still works in US gallons. Ours is reading 28.2mpg. If it is still calculating in US gallons that equates to 33mpg which is good for mainly urban driving for a car of this type. I also have a Rover 25 1.4 which is sluggish in comparison and only does between 34-36mpg on mixed driving.
We love our Tucson Limited. A friend of ours took it for a spin, he has a Freelander (old model) and he said the Tucson is miles better. We were going to buy a 2nd hand Rav 4 diesel but found that slow off the mark too and the steering was too light, no feel.
Feel free to contact me if you want more info.

Hi Mal,

Many thanks for your response and your kind invitation for me to contact you. The consumption figures you quote are certailnly much better than some I've seen for the older version! However, I'm very undecided at the moment whether or not to go for a 4x4 at all.

Right, lets get down to basics, i.e. what am I looking for in a vehicle? My wife and I wanted a vehicle that is a little higher and easier to get in and out of, and also a little roomier than most ordinary saloons. A friend asked if I wanted something for towing, or if I was planning on any off road driving; to which the answer is certainly not on both accounts! He then suggested the Citroen Picasso which has all the things I am looking for in a car - plus outstanding fuel economy. He says that he has managed 66 mpg on a long run in a Picasso Exclusive 1.6 HDI 110hp - that is marginally more than the 64.2 stated in the brochure! Okay, not as macho-looking as the Tucson perhaps, but certainly very tempting!!! So, perhaps this is the wrong forum for me after all! Anyhow, Good Luck with your new Tucson Limited, and thanks again.

Regards,
Will Owen

Just before you make the biggest mistake of your life and buy a French Citreon Picasso- my new Hyundai 6 speed I have had for only 5 days and I am getting 38 to the gall so far-whats it going to be doing once I have run it in?

The Citreon Picasso has no Heart

Cheers

Hi Itza,

Hmmm, we're still pondering here!!! First of all, may I ask how would you describe the journeys you've done so far in your new Tucson, e.g. motorways, A roads, B roads, town or a combination of all? Oh, and does this one indicate US or UK gallons?

Regards,
Will

Will
Its been a mixture of M ways and ordinary roads but all out of main driving hours (I am retired) so not much queuing done apart from a stint of 40mph max on the A34 due to roadworks- and we saw 3 blokes leaning on a shovel on double time and the supervisor in his car chatting to another one- that was the sum total of work being carried out for about a 5 mile run through the cones.

Don't ponder mate there are dealers out there who have ex demo Limiteds that are a couple of thou cheaper and they will still take part exes.

Sorry indicates in UK gallons now

Cheers
Itza

Itza,

I must say that it's getting much more tempting but I think we shall wait for a few more weeks and, in the meantime, try and sell our main car privately before we do anything. We're in no big rush as we have a little Astra 1.6 as well but that will be sold too after we've decided what to get. This is why we're looking carefully at what we might get (in terms of economy) out of a new car as, whatever it is, it will be used for all of our car journeys.

We know the bit of the A34 between the M40 and Oxford quite well as we sometimes stay with my wife's relatives in Kennington. A couple of 'road workers'(!) leaning on shovels, miles upon miles of coned off lanes; a very familiar sight up our way as well my friend!!!

Many thanks once more.

Best regards,
Will

I have the older 5 speed box CRTD GSI model and throughout its 17 500 miles (so far) its averaged about 35mpg (total mix of long and short, urban and motorway driving). This is distinctly better than many earlier models. Even though I did have the so called modification at about 11 000 miles it made no difference. BUT would have been happier if it was reaching the 39.8mpg 'official' figure, but for a heavy car such as the Tuscon its not bad. Really like it!
