It's not a manufacturers defect. They are plastic, therefore, they don't bend. These are a lot more sturdy than the metal core supports. Helps increase chassis rigidity I'm sure. With the metal ones, in a wreck, they get bent, or torn, some shops will just bend them, or weld them back into place. They weigh a lot less than the metal ones, and are a lot more solid.

Looking at mine (unless I'm mistaken?) It doesn't look like it plays a major part in Chassis rigidity, to be honest being made of plastic that splits and breaks at less than 10Mph I'm glad it doesn't.
I agree, it's a good thing that they don't bend. They just break real easily??
I'm hoping that it's somthing to do with a "Safety Feature" like a crumple zone?? that way I wouldn't feel so ripped off by Hyundai if I ever broke mine.
