"I wonder if (the strut tower bar) will stop my car from wallowing on uneven pavement."

Probably not. That's really not what it's for. The coil-over suspension, or simply stiffer springs if they're available, would be the ticket for that.

The strut tower brace is intended to lessen flexing of the chassis. What it could do for you, conceivably, would be to reduce torsional chassis flex over uneven surfaces. As a practical matter, it's more likely to reduce rattles and squeaks, and/or lessen the rhythmic resonance that some drivers report when driving at a constant speed around 40 or 45. It could lead to firmer cornering too, but only a little.

Thanks for the explaination TLynn! Another question if you don't mind. Does coil-over or stiffer springs equal harsher ride?

(that having been said, I'll still probably order a strut tower brace for mine, for sh!ts & giggles, if nothing else)

I'd like to do this too but it seems these days my "sh!ts and giggles" money is going to buy gasoline :( . Let us know when you get the brace. I'd like to hear your impressions of it.

I got the H&R springs for Azera installed. Here are my subjective experiences. The springs cost ~$230, the installation ~$360 without the alignment that is still due after approx 100 miles. I had the springs installed at the dealer, I figured they know the best way to take the strut out, take it apart and put it all back together again.

I've driven approx 30 miles with it now. Around town it is quite bumpy and I discovered a few new rattles / squeeks in the dashboard. Some of my grievances with the suspension are still there, especially the slow bouncing in the front after you driven over a big bump.

The thing that has greatly improved is the steering. The car is so much more controllable now. With the stock suspension I sometimes was reminded of steering a boat in windy conditions (needs constant adjustment). Now however, the car pretty much goes where you point it. I can take corners much tighter. Highway driving has considerably improved. The car does not swerve left to right and back anymore. It is more like it is on rails. On the highway the bumpiness of the suspension is not so noticeable.

The car is now a little lower ~1.3". You notice this when you get in and out of the car. The car does not look low-rider low, more comparable to a BMW 3-series coupe. I think it looks better. I have had no rubbing of (stock) wheels and tires and so far (only 30 miles) have not come across a speed bump I cannot take.

I'll post a picture later.

And here is a picture of my Azera with H&R springs installed. You can see the car sits a bit lower. I think it looks better.

jvrijn, thanks for the report. This is something that I'm very interested in. The suspension attributes are the only significant gripe I have with the Azera.

When you say bumpy, do you mean bumpier than before because mine is quite bumpy over rough pavement now. Is it because the springs are much stiffer?

Bummer about the squeaks and rattles in the dash. I wonder what created them.

That is good news about the tighter steering. I long for better control on cornering because right now it is a little floaty.

Did you replace front and back springs?

What did the dealership guys say about the warranty? Does it really void it?

I've heard that lowering will affect the alignment process. Does it require a special kit or something to compensate for 1.3"?

You seem to be happy with the results. Do you have any regrets? I would think the big worries would be the warranty and alignment problems.

Hi,

Yes, the car is definitely bumpier than before and though I expected this, I wasn't quite prepared for it. The bumpiness is caused by the stiffer springs.

I did replace both front and back springs. The kit I bought comes as a set of 4. The alignment still needs to be done, so I do not know how difficult or costly it will be. Though the dealer did not mention alignment at all, I have heard from others that this should be done after approx 100 miles, so the springs have the chance to settle in a bit.

As for the warranty, well I decided to take a bit of a chance here. People who own lowered cars often quote some law that does not allow manufacturers to void warranty except for those parts that have been modified. Hence, if my shocks now give up, it is clear I will be responsible for the total cost of repair. If something else gives up, the dealer / Hyundai may try to pin it on the sports springs, but I guess we'll find out in court if this is true. Anyway, I drive very little (6000m per year) so I am hoping that nothing breaks :)

And I agree, it does look much better...

Jeroen

I had lowering springs on the stock suspension of one of my previous cars. It was ok for a while, but the shortened and stiffer springs prematurely wore out the factory shocks. Hopefully yours hold up.
