I brought my 2005 Hyundai Tuscon to the dealer at 23,000 miles, for an oil change, tire rotation, and a new air filter. They convinced me that since they are changing the air filter, they should change the PCV valve as well. So I said yes, but when I checked the owners manual, it mentioned nothing about a PCV valve. Is this something that needs to be changed, or was the dealer just trying to get some extra money out of me?

Thanks.

23k miles might be a little early. We recommend changing them at 30k, but it's not absolutely necessary.

I changed the PCV valve at 30K in my Tucson. This part doesn't cost much and the effects can be noticed in the engine performance. I usually do my own Tucson service.

Kind regards,

Does the 05 2.0L have just a PCV valve or does it have a filter also?

from Wiki - Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve, or PCV valve, is a one-way valve that ensures continual evacuation of gases from inside a gasoline internal combustion engine's crankcase.

part costs about $5 or $6.. dont know how to replace though.. labor will probably cost you $40 or $50 because that's what mechanics like to do..

dont know why it would need to be replaced at 23k miles though.. or even 30k.. if you change the oil routinely, the PCV valve shouldnt be getting clogged that early...

I don't have a manual for my 05 and like to replace the filter portion, some have one some don't, every couple years or 20k miles since I live in a very dusty area. Anything other than a major overhaul or transmission work is a do it yourself issue for me. I did find the license plate bulb locally, it was the more expensive long-lasting version, thats all they stocked, $2.50 a piece.

i assume you got the Sylvania long-lasting bulb then? not a bad idea anyway.. less chance you will have to replace as soon...

You are correct, I got the Sylvania long-lasting bulb as thats all they had. Not sure what makes this bulb long lasting as the filament is so small you can barely see it. Its an odd design where Hyundai decided on 2 license plate lights and chose a very non-standard bulb. I believe every other light on the vehicle is standard, easily found and cheap. In any case they came in packs of 2, so should the other one go out and if they really are long-lasting, I'll never have to replace them again.

Funny thing with my last car, didn't have a single bulb go out for 8 years. I then figured its about time some of the others light may start going out also. So I went and bought a spare bulb for every light on the car as I planned on keeping it several more years. You can probably guess the ending, in the 5 more years I owned it, not a single bulb failed. A 13 year old car and only 1 bulb ever needed replacing.

well, knock on wood, we havent had any lights go out on out Tuc yet.. (had since last June)...

my last car (98 Escort ZX2) - i had bulbs going out all the time... actually failed inspection since one of my lights was out that I didnt know about.. had to replace the headlights about 6 times (then again, i did buy SilverStars - which dont last for cr*p) but also 3rd brake light, turn signals, etc, etc)... i actually had an extra set of healdlight bulbs still in the package when i traded that car is - gave them to my sister who used the same ones...
