Hey guys! First real post here..

I had some trouble with my Hyundai 2001 Elantra GT recently. Just after my 60k mile bumper to bumper warranty was up I started getting a P0715 and P1529 troublecode. The real deal is the P0715 which is the Input Speed Sensor on the Transmission. I would clear the codes with a scan tool and they would come back usually within 30 minutes of driving. When the check engine light comes on the car locks itself into 2nd or 3rd gear.. mine always seemed to be 3rd gear. At first I thought it had to be a loose cable, but I just ended up replacing the sensor and everything seems great now.

I took a bunch of pictures for anyone else with this problem, it's really simple to fix if you have a couple tools (philips screwdriver, 10mm and 12mm sockets with extensions, 10mm wrench, dentist like pick, air compresser or can of compressed air, and a magnetic pickup tool is helpful).

I purchased the $50 vol. 1 service manual for my vehicle and it really doesn't help you much in the replacement, or even location, of the input speed sensor (to the transmission). It just has a quick one-page flow chart to diagnose the problem if you are seeing the P0715 code. Actually, if you are seeing this code, more likely than not the dang sensor is bad. These hall-effect magnetic pickup sensors seem to be a good source of income for dealers because they fail like crazy. There does seem to be a life to them though, but consistently after 60k they seem to either go bad, or hang on for a while longer. My dealer said they replace them constantly. Anyhoo, save yourself the $50 for the manual and just get the $66 sensor.

Here we go:

Thanks! I'm an electronic engineer, so I pay attention to detail ;) I would have liked to do more for this tutorial, but there are only so many hours in the day. I also saw what was out there and felt obligated to share what I've learned so others can find the info easier.

Feel free to post this around wherever it's appropriate, and if anyone wants to add to it please do. I have larger pics also if necessary, but these should be plenty good.

Link-backs to this post would be appreciated also. I'd like to see if people find it useful. There are other things I want to do to my car in which I may do similar write-ups in the future.

Ok, enough blabbing..

I was in the middle of transferring my websites to a new registrar and hosting company. Everything seems to be working again now. Good luck with the repair! Mine is still working great.

Thanks I was thinking I had a bad transmission so this is sure a relief to find the codes (I got the same codes) and your description fit my symptoms exactly.

It is great news that replacing the sensor will probably fix the problem.

Fantastic job with the photos, yellow highlight and instructions.

This post is AWESOME. Does anyone know if this could be why my 02 Elantra will not go over 30-40 MPH? It's my daughter's car and I do not want to spend a lot of guessing money! I am not receiving any trouble codes. The car is running fine and operating just fine otherwise. Thanks in advance for your help!

You should start a new thread for this problem, it's completely unrelated.

A lot of complaints about the same symptoms. Check for a plugged up catalytic converter. One way is to put the car on ramps, start the car and observe the relative temperature of the exhaust pipe AFTER the cat. If the pipe is noticeably cooler after the cat, suspect a plugged cat. Another way is to observe the exhaust coming out of the exhaust pipe. It should blast pretty good out the pipe when you step on the gas. The most reliable way is of course to take the cat off and look inside.

same problem, same repair, car now works great. Obviously a known problem (judging by how much the sensor cost here @ 281$ CAN).

Can someone please confirm if the 5-speed manual tranny has the input and output sensors? I am getting P0501 which is generically being mis-read by the autozone scan as a possible VSS problem. I bought the sensors and got to looking under the hood today and could not find the sensors. I came across a post somewhere else saying the manual tranny does not have input and output sensors. PLEASE HELP!

Thanks!

Manual transmission does not have input or output speed sensors, but there is a VSS.

Take your sensors back to Autozone and get your money back, they should have not sold them to you.

VSS is different from output or input speed sensor. It depends on your model and year as to where the VSS is.

Brett777,

Great step by step photos of getting to the Elantra Input sensors! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)

http://www.hyundai-forums.com/index.php?sh...=13320&st=0

I have a 2000 Sonata GLS 6cyl and I’m thinking the location of the Input Sensor on it is the close to the same as in your Elantra photo’s. I just received new input & output sensors for my car but before I start in I have two questions:

1) Can anyone verify this for me if the location of the Input sensors in the photos for the 2001 Elantra are in the same place (or close to) where I might find them on my 2000 Sonata GLS?

2) I also need to know where the output sensor is located with respect to one of these photo’s. Can you give me a general position/pointer for its location as well?

Please Advise and Thanks in advance

Carl
