Since I made the oil change, I notice that when the engine is started from cold that I can hear the hydraulic tappets for a few seconds as the engine is spinning up.  That is an indication of oil starvation at start-up I think. :crying:

should I take the cap off of the oil filter assembly and check the small O-ring?  Is there anything else I should check? :(

That's the startup noise I was talking about in another thread - Brazzel or somebody agreed it sounds terrible at startup. I said timing noise but I don't know if the chain tensioners are oil pressure fed on this car. If it makes you feel any better, both Thor and Soo-Dae make some noise, either valvetrain or timin chain noise, for a few seconds after startup, and neither has had their oil changed yet, ~1600 miles and ~2600 miles, respectively.

Pah! If there was a pneumatic strap wrench I'd buy 2 just so I didn't have to make the twisting motion. One because I'd lose it promptly in my disastrously messy tool shed, the 2nd one to use at every oil change on all the cars.

Would save more wrist-action strength for lifting beer to lips.

I'm all about economizing.

Its really easy to change the filter. you can use a regular oil filter wrench to get it off (obviously to size). Just pull the cap straight up, and keep it straight when you pull it away from the car. Get a handful of paper towels, and pull out the filter assembly, and pitch it. Wipe down the threads and smooth surfaces with another paper rag (the blue ones you can buy at advance, carquest, etc). Soak up as much oil as you can on the bottom, and then prep the new filter. Put a little new oil on the o-ring on the bottom of the filter, and push it into place. Drain the old oil that remains in the cap (if the center piece comes off, it snaps right back into place, I take it off anyways to get it really clean). Remove the old O-ring from the cap and the center piece. Install the new O-rings and lightly lube them with fresh oil. Install the cap onto the manifold. Hand tighten. If it won't go all the way with your hand, use the oil filter wrench or strap wrench to tighten it (if it takes ALOT of force, something ain't right, it should be relatively smooth and easy to turn...this just gives you the leverage you need). Once its securly tightened onto the manifold, you can plug up your drain pan, and fill the car up with oil. Mine takes 5.5 quarts. I start her up and leak check the filter manifold before replacing the plastic cover.

On another note, Both my Sonata and Azera do the valve tapping noise on start up, like there is no oil. Even though it sounds crappy, its normal. There is still oil on the parts, and once the engine gets the oil everywhere, it runs smooth. The timing chain on the Azera does make noise, but its a different sound from the valves tapping on cold start.

Thanks again everyone for your responses. I guess the car did this with the oil from the factory too, but either I did not notice it or perhaps they used a thicker oil such as 10W-30.

I have always used 10W-30 oil in all my vehicles before, including a Mercury Marquis that the Azera replaced. The Mercury specified 5W-20 oil too. It gets hot enough here in Texas that I do not think 20 weight oil is really quite protective enough. I may go ahead and change to synthetic oil at the next oil change. Our Winters are so mild here that we almost never have even single digit temperatures (Farenheit).

With a new auto the tendency is to notice every new or different noise until accustomed to the vehicle. I don't think I would notice timing chain noise unless it is really pronounced and loud. I have some hearing loss from being around artillery in the Army years ago.

Have fun!
