Hi Guys......My Lantra unleaded automatic 1.8 CDI sounds like a deisel when I start up in the mornings. This gradually dissapears after about 20mins driving. Any ideas. Tried different oils like cheap and the most expensive and the best to no avail. No probs with the exhaust apparently. Does not seem to effect the drive or performance just fed up waking the neigbours.

Someone said something about an ERG valve? No manual so I don`t know what I am looking for or even if its the prob?

Going on hols shortly so any help asap will be very welcome........

THX cODGER

one possible cause would be noise from the hydrolic tappets, what sort of noise is it? does it sound like a metalic tapping? how old is the car? what is the milage?

Its done 78,000 miles and the noise is not mettalic. It just sounds like a deisel when that starts and after about 20mins this disappears and it runs sweet and quiet. Checking the front exhaust pipe and all looks ok there.
Garage guy says it might be an Easy Return valve? Dont know waht that is or how much to replace.

Hi Codger.

Do you have a reputable, interested enough, mechanic to check this properly?

If not, find one. They're worth their price in time saved alone.

Or if you are keen enough, get enthusiastic, get a manual and do it yourself.

I apologise for not knowing enough about the ERG or easy return valves to help you. Please check with Hmaservice.com for more information.

The symptons sound a bit a odds with each other. My experience with diesels tells me that diesels clatter, metallically. Oil starved tappets will also clatter.

Good fortune to you.

Cheers,

Andrew
