I have a 1.6L 1993 Lantra that seems to have developed a serious overheating problem. With obvious things out of the way the usual suspect is the head being cracked but a mate of mine said that they are normally good. So it could be the headgasket. Has anyone had any trouble with there car and if so what was the outcome?

head gasket leakage can be a problem with any make or model of car, a compression test would normally show up a leaking gasket together with other symptoms such as overheating,miss-firing,loss of power, poor starting and loss of coolant, so for starters l would get a compression test done

Thankyou for your info. I live on a remote Island and not possible to do the compression test. I've taken the head off, the gasket seemed in good condition but after cleaning the head up it was good too, with no noticeable marks. It was using water and building up a lot of pressure in the radiator. Tomorrow i'll take a closer look for cracks if none I'll put a new head gasket and see how it goes.
