I have owned my 1995 Lantra since new. It has done 190000+km and is still running very well. As it is my "run around" work car it is my plan to simply keep driving it until it doesn't go any more. I have had no mechanical issues with it and it has been serviced regularly according to the makers requirements. The exterior was completely resprayed a few years ago after storm damage and is in as new condition. These days I do have to add a small amount of oil between services but it does not blow any smoke.
I'd be interested to know the experience of others with the longevity of this vehicle. It still does about 15000km per year.

The manual 94 Lantra I have has done 200,000k. I rebuilt the gearbox at 170,000k. I burnt a valve going up a hill at 160,000k but that was because the exhaust flex section had disintegrated making the engine run hot which meant the head was reco'd. I replaced the HLAs at 185,000k in an attempt to get rid of cold engine lifter tick which didn't help all that much. The radiator is a little marginal at this point.

I have also replaced the shocks(KYB), springs(Lovells), front rotors, front wheel bearings, lower ball-joints, steering tie-rod ends and sway bar bushes. Also fixed oil leaks from the sump, cams, crank, oil pump and BS seals.

Things that need fixing are:

-dead AC clutch
-lower timing cover needs replacing
-hydraullic timing belt tensioner needs replacing
-rear interior door handle needs replacing.

Pretty much normal things for a car of this age. Also, when I bought this car the balance shafts were WAY out of time making the engine seem harsh. The belt needed replacing in any case and once I fixed that up the engine is sweet and showing no signs of cylinder bore wear when I was in there.

Hi

When you say " auto box" I guess you mean the automatic transmission.

When I bought my car it had 174,000km on it and I replaced the trans fluid & filter.
Be sure to use the correct trans fluid.
In the owners manual it will say to use type #21233 or some number like that.
Don't use "Dextron" trans fluid.

Since then I haven't touched the transmission.

Lucky? I don't know.

I'm still waiting for something catastrophic to happen so I can go and get a newer car.
