Hi,

I have a 1992 elantra 1.8L DOHC auto trans that wont start. Took out the spark plugs and found they were not firing. I also removed the timing cover to check the belt and removed the gas line to make sure it was getting gas, both were ok. Does anyone have any idea what it could be.

Plugs and wirers are new.

Thanks in advance, Santi

When you start the engine do you hear the fuel pump start? You can stick your head under the rear of the car and listen for it (high pitched whine) while you get someone else to crank the engine.

If you hear the fuel pump start then the ECU is receiving a signal from the engine position sensor and there is probably something wrong in the ignition circuit (dead coilpack or ignition transistor for example). If you do not hear the fuel pump start then there is a problem either with the ECU, harness or CAS = Cam Angle Sensor = engine position sensor.

One other thing to check for is a single wire that connects to the power steering pump that can sometimes get knocked off. If that is disconnected the engine will not start.

Thanks for answering xlr8 au

Okay here what I found. I stuck my head under the car while my friend crank the engine and heard the fuel pump working. Looks like it might be coil pack. I will replaced it and see what happens.

The wire was also on for the power steering pump. When I first bought the car the wire was not on and I use drive it like that. Weird huh.

I have two more question, is the Engine Crank Angle Sensor the same as the engine Camshaft Position Sensor. The reason why I'm asking is that when I did a search at an auto parts store they had the two sensors mention above but they look the same and where is the ignition transistor located on the car?

Thanks again, Santi

Yes on these the motors both the Cam Position sensor and Crank Angle Sensor are incorporated into the same sensor package that is mounted on the end of the inlet camshaft. You only need one.
