I have read elsewhere that high cost maintenance is required on the Lambda engine each 60K as it does not have hydraulic lifters. Anyone know the approximate cost in US dollars for the maintenance. :whistling:

As far as my knowledge goes the 3.3 lambda does NOT have a timing BELT, instead a timing CHAIN is used which is service free over the lifetime of an engine.

You are right referring to the timing chain, I am referring to the lifters in the valve train. The Lambda has something like solid lifters that are not easily adjusted.

A valve job is a valve job. Most hydraulic lifters do not even require one.
Using either the plates (like VW does since over 20 years) or adjust them by tensioning doesn't matter nowadays.

I have read shims or plates cannot be used; that is partially what makes the adjustment expensive. I am not a mechanic, but do a lot of reading on this and other forums. I read this adjustment is rather involved and was inquiring if anybody had a handle on the expense.

I am under the impression the Lambda does not have hydraulic lifters.

It's been many months since there was a posting to this thread but I thought I would add my 2 cents. When I got my 07 SF 3.3L in December one of the first things I did was peruse the maintenance schedule, something I always do with a new car. The Maintenance Log that comes with the car shows all of the things that must be done and when. The required action is indicated with either an "R", which means "Replace", or an "I", which means "inspect, clean, adjust, repair or replace". Among the usual items requiring attention, such as oil and filter, air cleaner filter, and spark plugs, is "Valve clearance", which shows an "I" at 60,000 miles. This made me nervous because I knew this could be an expensive proposition, so I asked the Hyundai service manager what it meant. His answer was, essentially, "don't worry about it. The lifters will probably never need service, but if they do you will know it because they will start tapping. When you bring it in for the 60000 mile service we'll listen and if we don't hear anything we check this item off as 'inspected'." I just hope he knew what he was talking about.
