Our HSH got Totaled

While making a move from our home to a new home in Las Vegas, my wife got clipped by the trailer wheels of a semi truck. It caught the LF headlight area and proceeded to strip the left side of the car all the way to the rear quarter panel! All she remembers about the accident is that she was following me in the moving truck and the next thing was nothing but white(airbag in the face) and dirt and grass flying everywhere. She came through with just a few cuts and scrapes along with a few bruises which is pretty much a miracle. The only thing left of the driver door was a few pieces of the interior panel. The car luckily didn't roll and pretty much saved her life due to the airbags keeping her inside.
We still haven't heard whether she or the truck crossed the center but I do know that wind may have been a factor.
Made it to our destination a day late and minus a car but still an intact family.
Just had to leave a good comment on the integrity of the HSH in an accident.

Wow! Sorry about your car but the fact that someone walked away from that is a miracle! You know one of the things that turned me on to Hyundai is that my Sonata feels like a solid car....years ago many foreign cars felt like tin cans. This is a testament to how far the Asian cars have come with regard to safety tech.

Scary for sure, glad that your wife is ok and was able to walk away from that; it must have been terrifying from her view inside the car to see it unfold right next to her. Do you think you will be replacing it with another Sonata hybrid?

Thanks to all the airbags, she never saw anything until it was over. She also never got a good look at the car until a few days later when we went to collect our personal belongings at the tow company.
We've been looking at prices locally and they seem really reasonable. Surprising that the regular Sonata is much higher than the Hybrid. I guess with lower gas prices, they are having a hard time moving the Hybrids.

Congrats to you guys on the new addition. Were you happy with the insurance payout that they offered you upfront or did you have to fight them on it? Best of luck with the new hybrid and lots of safe miles ahead.

I don't know where I came up with that color but it is the Graphite Blue Pearl instead. Insurance was within a payment of what we still owed on it so after the sale of the house, we are still OK with the payout.
We shouldn't put as many miles quite as fast on the new one since we will be cutting out the almost monthly trips from Kansas to Las Vegas we were doing!

You mentioned that the insurance payment was within a payment of what you still owed on it. That is a bummer in that you made payments for three years and then all of those payments are zeroed out. I guess it could have been worse if it had been totaled out after just one year of payments, I bet you would have to pay out of pocket to settle your car note. I guess that is why they sell "gap insurance" so that if your car gets totaled out soon after you buy it, the insurance will cover the outstanding balance.

You mentioned trouble adjusting to the backup camera. Does your model have the cross traffic alert? With my PHEV, the backup camera works far better than the mirror. As you are backing out of a parking spot, the backup camera will actually show any cars or people that are coming your way.

Any case, the important thing is your wife wasn't hurt in the car wreck!

Great that it all worked out in the end for you, now tell your wife to stop driving into those tires lol. What do you think so far about the 2016 model compared to the 2013? Much improved? Better on gas? Let us know. I am still enjoying my 2011 and a tank of gas lasts me over 3 weeks now that my son left for boot camp and hasn't been using it.

I think it is going to be a while before the wife drives it. The accident really affected her mentally. Any kind of loud noise will almost bring her to tears and she has to close her eyes when we are next to any large truck on the road. Haven't had enough time to really evaluate the 16 yet but I really like that they now have the tire pressure monitor system worked out to tell you which tire is low compared to the 13 light and guess which one is low. Like the rear camera but it is hard to change to using it after using mirrors all these years. Hands free trunk opening is fantastic.

A family member got in a highway-speed accident a few years ago that totaled the 2002 Accord and fired the air bags. Thankfully it was an Accord where a previous recall had replaced the Takata air bags about five years earlier. I remember taking it to the dealer for that recall and they told me they had inspected a hundred cars already but none were actually affected.

When I picked up the car they told me I should play the lottery because mine were affected and I got new airbags out of it. This actually was before all of the really bad news came out about Takata airbags. The car and airbags would have been twelve years old at the time of the accident and that car model year is listed in the recent alert from NHTSA to just stop driving the car because analysis showed there was up to a 50% chance that the airbag inflator would explode if the previous recall was not done. (shudder) NHTSA: New test data on particular subset of Takata air bag inflators shows substantially higher risk | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

That family member was scared to drive for over a year and is now OK on the highways but still skittish, especially around large trucks. (A semi started to merge into them and the abrupt evasive move caused the car to spin out of control at 65 MPH and hit the concrete divider on all four sides.)

Your wife probably will need a lot of time on this; just be patient with her and offer to drive her around.

No it doesn't have the cross traffic alert, just the rear view. I guess I kind of worded that wrong, I'm so used to using the outside mirrors(hardly ever use the inside mirror) that I forget to even look at the monitor until I'm done backing.
