How often do you reset your average MPG?

I used to reset my average MPG after every fill-up. Then I cut back to a couple of times per year so I just keep a running average. I tend to let the car idle a lot during the Winter and Summer so it's not really accurate to my driving. It comes in handy if I want to keep track of mileage on a road trip. One thing that I've found is I'll drive better after I reset it because I'm trying to see how high I can get it to go. The average goes down over time because of idling so I slack off on the economy driving a little. Not by much but I'm no longer on a mission for maximum MPG.

Don't really believe what you see on Hyundai's MPG screens as most Hyundai's don't read the actual MPH you are going because of the Specific tire sizes they choose and factor into their equation that actually Inflates MPG readings , Test this theory with a Garmin GPS and check MPH against Speedometer and you will find the problem, The new 2015 Sonatas seemed to have corrected this issue by going to 235-45-18 as opposed to 225-45-18's , I have a 2012 SE 2.0T and love it , and on a recent 100 mile trip (mostly highway) that MPG gauge read 27 MPG average , But it is wrong , I'll check again whwn I change tires to the size they are now using for 2015 , Thanks just some info that I experienced , Thanks

It's my wife's car and she rarely drives economically so it's useless to go by the tank. I reset it every time I get to drive it hopping to see 60mpg some day.

No choice on my Elantra, re sets every fill by itself. Now on my Ford Hybrid I just let it run. My question though is how long does the computer chip go in terms of miles before it resets the ave. For example, if I am averaging 40 mpg and drive 5000 miles, in theory it should change a lot slower if I had driven 10,000 miles and never changed it but I think the program uses a much shorter mileage range when it recalculates the mpg. Wish I knew how it makes the calculation. If I had gone 20,000 miles average 41 then in the winter when the MPG stinks I should still be around 40 by the end of winter if 20,000 was used in the calculation but I think it drops off mileage after a certain point so in reality not a long term MPG but just what the computer chip has in its program

What am I missing here? When I fill up, the AVG MPG gauge automatically gets reset to 0.0. Is there a setting that one can change to keep it as a running average? As I'm typing this, I think I recall that. I like having it reset with each tank. That way, the AVG displayed is indicative of current driving conditions.

There is a setting that controls when the average fuel economy calculations resets:

AVG fuel economy
Auto Reset - The average fuel economy will reset automatically when you drive after refueling.
Manual Reset - The average fuel economy will not reset automatically when you drive after refueling.

And here is what the manual says about that calculation:

Fuel economy - Average fuel consumption (MPG or l/100km)
This mode calculates the average fuel economy from the total fuel used and the distance since the last average economy reset. The total fuel used is calculated from the fuel economy input. For an accurate calculation, drive more than 0.03 miles (50 m).

Pressing the RESET button for more than 1 second, when the average fuel economy is being displayed, clears the average fuel economy to zero (----).
If the vehicle speed exceeds 1.6 MPH (1km/h) after being refueled with more than 1.6 gallons (6 l), the average fuel economy will be cleared to zero (----).

I reset mine after each fill up. I turned the auto reset off as you could miss writing down what the information was before it resets. I rather just manually reset it after I fuel up and write the information down. It would be really nice if the car had an instant MPG readout as well. The bar chart stuff and the little semi circle that go from 0 to 50 where you have to guess what it actually is does not cut it. I know that when going down a hill I am doing better than 50 mpg. I really liked on my old Prius how the number went from zero to 100 and you got an instant readout so you had a better clue what was going on. For a high tech car the display is really quite low tech.

Hmm... isn't that what fuelly is for?

BTW, I reset all readings that are able to be reset when refilling each tank. That way if something starts to go wrong (which it has not ont his car, but on others it has) I then have a more responsive indication of it. I can always do the lifetime averages myself manually.

Yes, mine does too and no according to Hyundai, it can't be changed to reset only on a refuel. I take it your Elantra also automatically resets on a refuel? Is your Elantra an automatic or manual transmission? As what it does differs from what the owners manual specifies, I've been in contact with the dealer and Hyundai and gotten lots of different stories, but the latest is that 19MY Elantra has the updated logic so that FE resets after 4 hours of key off. Allegedly done to reduce field claims that the fuel efficiency on the display was inaccurate. Of course now it's totally useless information and even more inaccurate. Anyway have you discussed with dealer or Hyundai? Have you heard from anyone else about this issue?

I use fuelly.com to keep up with my "per tank" mpg readings. I use my iphone to capture photo's of the odometer and fuel pump numbers at the end of the fill so I don't have to keep up with the receipt. I enter the numbers into fuelly when i get around to it.

As far as the cars average MPG readings, I really play with that a lot. I almost always reset it on each drive I make just to watch my economy readings for that given day / drive style / road and weather conditions. I will often reset it on the fly when my road condition changes just to view how mpg's are affected by traffic / car speed etc. I have also driven the same stretch of road and reset the mpg calculator to see driving in ECO mode compares to Normal, I seem to get worse mpg's in ECO than standard Normal setting.

I really like that my HSH will gives two separate MPG reports. First: After every trip it will give the result briefly when I shut it off (So I know how that particular drive/trip was - even relative to the overall MPG score). Second: It will give the result and reset after each fill up (so I know how that tank was).

Thanks for the additional information, but now you have made me curious about what your 2016 HSH SE actually does with respect to the MPG. So after fuel is added does it first flash what the MPG was before you fueled the car and then reset? I think mine may do that after I put in fuel. More importantly, what does the MPG do after a trip when you turn it off and what does it do after you start it for the next trip. If my next trip is after the car has been off for 4 or more hours, the MPG just resets and starts fresh so will not give overall MPG.
