I have a 2002 Santa Fe with 125k on it and there is a terrible noise that sounds like the cam chain on both the from and back cylinders. I actually removed the front cam chain guide and the noise became much quieter, is the guide that important, should I have it on or not? are there any TSB's on this noise issue? My guess is that the chains are probably in need of replacement but it seems unreasonable after the mileage.

Dear Matt,

The inspection criteria are:

TIMING CHAIN
Check the bushing and plate of timing chain for wear. Replace if there is severe wear.

Timing chains do wear out, and you are at 125 k (you don't say if Kilometers or miles but you are in Canada). Check your wear, and replace. Timing chains do get sloppy, and this will affect your performance and fuel economy.

The guide is essential. Especially when the chain starts to get slop, the guide is there to keep the chain from jumping off the camshaft sprocket.
