My girlfriend has a 2003 or 2004 Santa Fe 3.5L and the oil light went on. I want to put some oil in the car before I take it to the dealership. What kind of oil (type and brand) should I use?

PLEASE HELP

pacman!

When in doubt, READ THE OWNER'S MANUAL.

It is likely in the glove box of the Santa Fe. Flip to Section 6. Go to the SPECIFICATIONS. Scroll down to OIL.

Any name brand oil in 5W20 will do. Castrol, Quaker State, Pennzoil are all good to get you to the dealership.

If the oil light is coming on, do verify that you check your oil to make sure it is low on the dipstick. If the level is correct on the dipstick, you might have an oil pump failure, and operating the engine will cause catastrophic engine damage.

Nice thing...your 2003 or 2004 Santa Fe should still be under warranty...unless you are over 100K miles.

How often does she get the oil changed?? It's hard to belive that it looses that much oil between recommended 3,000 mile oil changes.

Check the dip stick while the vehicle is parked on a FLAT HORIZONTAL surface - engine OFF. If you need oil (dip stick is way low or doesn't show any oil at all) she may be in luck. Just add 10W-30 or what the manual recommends for her type of driving until it reaches the full mark (DO NOT OVER FILL). Start the engine and let it run for less than 30 seconds - DO NOT PRESS THE ACCELERATOR. If the oil pump is good the oil light should extinguish. If it doesn't and the engine starts making loud expensive noises, tell her to take a second mortage on her home (sorry, that was my attempt at some humor cause the repair will cost her BIG $$$$$ even if it's under warranty - neglect is not covered).

If she does change the oil when recommended and she's lost that much oil then she may have another problem. Nicely tell your GF to check the oil every time she adds gas to see if she's loosing oil and check for any leaks.

If she isn't loosing oil and all is well tell her she needs to count her blessings and to change the oil every 3,000 miles.

Jim

What exactly were you two doin in the woodshed??!!

Hi all, I was curious if any one else has had this problem

I have a 2004 Santa Fe with only 12,000 (I'm in the military and deployed alot so I have not driven the vehicle much it is my secondary vehicle) and I get its oil and filter changed on schedule. A few days ago my Oil Light started to come on intermittetly. I got its oil changed and it was fine for a day or so. Now the oil light is starting to come on and staying on where as before it would come on then after a few minutes go out. I investigated the engine and found no signs of leakage and everything looks tight. Any one have any ideas?

Thanks
Jeff

before you start to worry about oil pump failier and low oil pressure the fault may well be a faulty oil pressure switch, this switch is cheap and easy to change

Does anyone know exactly where the oil pressure switch or indicator is located in a 2003 Hyundia Santa Fe. I have a problem with the oil lamp coming on after driving a few miles it glows from slightly to moderatly to bright red. Once I stop and then restart the vehicle the light stays off for 5 to 10 miles then reappers while driving any where between 40 to 60 mph.
Any help will be greatly appreceated.

In both the 2.7 and 3.5 engines, the oil pressure switch is right next to the oil filter. You'll need a deep 24mm socket, be careful as there is a sealant applied to the threads. When reinstalling use one of the sealants listed below and tighten to the torque listed below, be careful not to over-torque.

Sealant: Three bond No.1141E or 3M ATD No. 8660 or equivalent.
15 ~ 22 Nm (150 ~ 220 kg.cm, 11 ~ 16 lb.ft)
