Red face stalling/hesitation not sure what's wrong 2001 santa fe 2.4

okay so im working on my car and i'm getting a little frazzled. my car is having hesitation/stalling/power issues. i was pretty sure it was one of two things but now im not sure whats going on. i started by replacing the spark plugs and wires because the previous owner told me she had the timing belt replaced when she replaced the tranny but not the plugs. the plugs did need replacing and so did the wires. i did that and the problem was still there. i then checked the fuel filter on the pump and it was completely blocked off. now i did something here that was a cheap fix but the fuel filter/sock/whatever they want to call it. i removed the sock and got a soft brush and premium gas and just cleaned it myself. i swear the thing looked new after i was done with it and i was very careful when removing and reinstalling. i also hit the fuel pump reset in the engine compartment. so the next day after i got off from my job the car was stalling again. i got home and pulled the pump first to see if i missed something and i had put the pump gasket for bolting into the tank on a little crooked. i fixed that then checked my work on the plugs and wires as well. everything looked just fine and plugs were gapped at .44 where they should be i think. i hit the fuel reset and took another test drive and its still hesistating on the road. i dont know about with a cold start thats when it stalls but the engine was still warm by the time i finished it only took me about an hour. anyway i was wondering if i should move onto the timing belt? maybe someone has a different idea? im a mom with twins and i need my car. any pointers would be appriciated even telling me im dumb for cleaning the fuel filter instead of just replacing it. thanks!

I've been reading and it's sounding like a lot of people have issues with the cps. I also forgot to mention that when I pulled the plugs the second time they were already slightly fouled. Could that be an indicator of something or just a result of incorrect gapping? (I reset the gap because the plugs were a little over .45 and I wanted them at .43

I kinda went to school for a couple years but never completed my degree. (did I mention 15 mo twin boys? Lol) I dont have enough field time but to just do the work fine with basic diagnosis. That's what got me to the fouled plugs and filter. I keep reading that a CPS can cause the same symptoms so I'm wondering if that seems like the next best step with no CELs. im new on here so im trying to read but most of the ppl with my symptoms either havent checked back on here or it's a CPS. what's messing me up is all the things I've done so far needed doing but have not achieved a correction. Any advice would be much appriciated

I know how you feel, girl! I've been having similar issues with mine, also. We took it to the dealer--they told us it was the Throttle Position Sensor. Replaced it--they told us that the one we bought was bad, and we needed a Hyundai one! Did that, too. Still not running right. Replaced Crank Sensor--now it dies (it didn't before). Have parts coming in to replace the Cam Sensor (and the connector--it's a broken, oily mess)

We did figure out that the valve cover gasket needs to be replaced--I suspect that is why it was coding Misfire on cyl 1 and knock sensor (oil leaking and fouling out the plug). Also, are your valves rattling? Caused by low oil pressure. Take a look around and see if you see oil anywhere.

Girl power!

Oh, by the way, be prepared if you have the 2.4 4 cyl engine--replacing that CPS the right way is a bear! It's routed in a little hole near the power steering pump. Unless you want to cut the wiring harness and splice it, you will have to take out the water pump pulley, the power steering pulley, the harmonic balancer, the motor mount, and the power steering pump itself.

I found that out. I finally got the crank sensor out after about 4 hours. Lol. And its OEM so I'm replacing it. My valve cover is leaking to so I'm gonna spend the $15 while I'm at this to replace it. It's leaking EVERYWHERE there was even some residue at the bottom of the timing cover on the inside. The good news is getting it back together will be cake now that I know all that I gotta do. I hope this fixes it bc that crank sensor isn't cheap and I gotta make a 4 hour trip next weekend to see family.

Hi
I have replaced my CPS as a result of non-start issues, and the problem still exists...
Inspecting the entire length of the cable, and no fraying , cracking or broken / loose wires....
Glad though I didn't have to spend the $240.00 plus Tax the Local dealer Quoted me for it!!

The Bracket for the power steering pump , needs to be loosened to route the CPS wire correctly, I believe it was four bolts...
I found no need to remove the PS pulley
also, no need to remove the PS`Pump in my case...

Water pump pulley, 4 bolts, can be removed before you remove the belt, makes things a little easier...
I remove the left engine mount as well, and then I can push the engine to the right enough with a 2 ft crowbar, to remove the Pulley

Next up is the Valve cover Gskt.....

It may be the source, of all evil, as I have found oil in the past in one of the Spark Plug wells....

Still start the car when not wanting to start , by pulling one of the plugs on the Coil Assembly and reconnecting it while it's being turned over....

These cars are @#$% as some of you are also experiencing....
LOL
