My Santa Fe is at 127,600 miles on the OEM shocks and she has spent her entire life in state free of road salt or corrosive de-icing agents. As of late, I've noticed the rear suspension creaks A LOT, even when going over minor waves or imperfections in the road. When backing out or pulling into the driveway, the rear end groans like the bed in an old Motel 6 and to be quite frank, it's got me concerned.

My reason for being worried is this: my previous car was a 1993 Toyota Previa that made this identical noise for several months until one night, the right rear shock absorber failed while I went over a speed bump. I left the car parked in a neighborhood overnight and limped it to a local tire store the next morning. In my research I have found that a bad bushing will also make this noise.

Any other ideas? I'm hesitant to drive the car until I feel that I can do so safely.

Thanks.

Dear lovemy,

I am amazed that you got 127K miles on your original struts. I had to replace mine at 108K miles. The groaning noise has a simple explanation: your struts are worn out and need to be replaced.

Byron,

Thanks for your reply. She goes in tomorrow so we'll see what the dealer has to say about it as well as my mysterious coolant loss issue.

Edit: How much is this going to cost me?

Okay...my mysterious coolant loss was chalked up to a simple loose hose clamp. Whew.

They can't replicate the rear suspension noise but I'm not angry. My service advisor is a great friend of mine and is going to take the car home tonight (I'm driving his Chevy Malibu). We're going to meet for dinner and see if I can get the car to make the noise.

The noise is coming from the driver side rear control arm. I've got the car back for now and the part is on order...probably be in on Monday.
