2013 SE alarm

I'm still trying to understand the keyless-entry (alarm) system. I thought it was just an intrusion-detection alarm, with no kill switch. But, today I went to a local alarm store. The owner told me it's about the best alarm you can get. He said it has "chipped" keys which prevent it from being started without the key being proximate. (I.e., no hotwiring. The only way to steal it is to tow it.).

He rattled off a lot of acronyms. Canbus, etc. I told him that it sounded like the only thing missing might be shock, glass and tilt detection. Maybe battery backup. (Not sure if the hood is protected.). I asked how that could be added. He said since it's "canbus" it's all proprietary. The aftermarket people haven't invested in it yet (for this car. Not even the 2012.). He talked like they might not ever do it. That it's increasingly becoming a proprietary dealer market.

I guess I'll talk to parts or service at my dealership. I'm just wondering if anyone else understands this topic. (Confirm whether I understand it?).

It sounds like I'm way ahead of the game in terms of a kill switch. I don't have to worry about it being stolen. But, it may be difficult to get better intrusion detection (glass, jacking up to steal mags, tow).

Thanks

Maybe I am missing something but it is my understanding that the 2012 and 2013 accents sold in the USA have no anti theft devices at all. Canada yes! USA no!

Canada requires chipped immobilizer keys by law. I don't believe this is true in the US. If you have a chipped immobilizer key, you will see a light near the zero on the tach. It's a car with a key symbol in it.. It appears when you first turn on the key... See pic below.

Other than that, there are no alarms or other anti theft devices (that I know of) offered with the RB Accent.

At some point I got the idea it had a basic intrusion (door open) alarm. But, I just locked my doors (with a window rolled down), waited 10 minutes, reached in and opened the door. No alarm.

The aftermarket guy said he thought it had the immobilizer (chipped key). I don't know how to test that. I don't have a tachometer, but I don't see any key icons when I turn on the ignition.

I'll go to the dealer today. They said they have someone who installs an alarm. I want to contact those people and learn more about what I have now versus what they install.

I'll speak to some more alarm companies to see if Viper would work. The guy I talked to yesterday said nothing would work because the 12 and 13 Accent has a "canbus" which is proprietary.

I just want some protection. I don't need remote start. Just kill switch, intrustion, shock and tilt. Maybe battery backup.

Sorry, mine has a tach. I got "manual transmission" on my mind when I read tach.

Yeah, that got my attention too. US spec car, SE trim. Should have a tach. Hmmm.

I went to the dealer to buy a jack. Spoke to the finance guy who sells the add-on. Also the service advisor. I didn't get the impression anyone knows.

They both seemed to think it should alarm if the door is opened after remotely locking the doors. But, I sat in the car, windows up, remotely locked. Waited 1 minute. Opened the door from the inside. No alarm.

The service guy said he believed it immobilized the ignition. That, if someone tried to start the car with a key (or hotwire) before using the remote to unlock it, the car's brain would disable the system requiring an elaborate recovery procedure.

But, the finance guy thought it was just a kill switch which could be bypassed by hotwiring.

I go back to pickup a special-order (cargo net) next week. I'll probably try to get more info.

It's frustrating because I don't want to invest in a replacement alarm system if the car's supposed to have some basic features which could be extended. For example, I don't want to add a kill switch if the ignition has a "brain" that does much more elaborate shutdown of the entire system.

But, at the same time, I don't get the feeling these people know for sure.

I went thru this whole exercise your describing at my dealership. They insisted it had an alarm and after being stumped figuring it out they were chagrined to finally learn it did not have one. Makes you think doesn't it!

Thanks, I'm glad to know it's not just me. I'd like to find a sophisticated parts guy who might know how feasible it is to install the immobilizer module, acquire a chipped key, etc. From what I can tell viewing the shop manual, the circuitry is there.

I still need to learn more about the add-on alarm the finance guy was pushing for $600. Maybe that's the immobilizer. I know he used that word. But, he may have meant ordinary aftermarket kill switch, not the chipped key (proximity-detection ignition).

If $600 buys the real immoboilizer that might be worth it.

Thanks again. I'll report back if I learn more.
