Check Engine Light on

My check engine light just came on while driving home tonight (Happy New Year, to me?! ) .... And there seems to be a weird rattly engine noise on the passenger side.

Just took the car to the mountains (800km round trip) all highway and got back Thursday night. Didn't drive yesterday, and today I took it out for a bit and it felt sort of loose... I don't know how else to explain it. Throttle didn't seem as responsive. I've only just hit the 6000km mark on it, and had the flash done at 4000km.

What in the world is wrong with my car???!!!! And now I can't even take it in til Tuesday because of the holiday. Help!

Did you pull over and check the obvious stuff? Oil level etc.

Probably a bad injector or a faulty O2 sensor. Do you have a code reader?

Yep- checked all the *normal* stuff and it's all good.

I just googled it, and came upon this: 2013 Hyundai Crash Tests, Recalls and Service Bulletins, 2012 Hyundai Crash Tests, Recalls and Service Bulletins

...it appears there's another service bulletin for our car (TSB-11-AT-009). "Operation of the transmission solenoid may lead to check engine light, transaxle held in 4th gear safe, and diagnostic trouble codes."

If this is my prob, is it still safe to drive the car until I can take it in?! Last time I drove a car with a check engine light on, the head gasket blew! Now I'm all paranoid... lol

Oh...it looks like that TSB was issued April 1/11... which I'm assuming would indicate my car, having been purchased mid-September, should already have whatever the remedy is done to it?!

If it matters, I also remember a burning smell before the check engine light came on... not like burning engine oil, but a smokey kinda burning smell... if that makes sense?!

Get the codes read. Thatll tell you pretty much what went wrong. Without knowing what code it is, you'll be taking a lot of shots in the dark.

So just as a follow up to this, the car was throwing a thermostat/coolant code. They said they tested everything and the thermostat and it appeared to be functioning, but if the engine light came on again, to bring the car in and they'd replace it.

So on Monday the check engine light came on again, and yesterday I had the thermostat replaced- they tested it and all was good. Just driving home now, and the check engine light just came on AGAIN. *pullshairout*.... what the heck? Brand new thermostat fried in just a day?! What's going on??!!!!

If you have an Advance Auto / Auto Zone (or similar) in the area, most of them will do a code scan for free.

Mine just keeps throwing the same code: "P0128 Coolant T/stat below regulating temperature."

...so if the thermostat was found 'not operating properly', replaced, then tested, and a day later my check engine light comes on again, what else could the problem be?!
